Before anything is condemned on a Candor refrigerator, it is worth separating two different faults that look identical from the front: air that cannot circulate inside, and heat that cannot leave at the back. That puts a blocked or dirty condenser coil at the top of the list here and a door that is not actually sealing at the bottom.
Symptoms, including the ones that mean something else
- Frost or a solid sheet of ice on the back wall — Light dusting is normal; a sheet that hides the vents means air has stopped moving through the evaporator.
- Cold at the bottom, warm at the top — or the reverse — A temperature split inside one compartment is an air-distribution symptom rather than a refrigeration one.
- NEAR MISS — the unit is completely silent and nothing is cold — That is a power or a start-component fault and it belongs on the no-power page, not this one.
The ranking
- A blocked or dirty condenser coil — The coil is how the unit gets rid of the heat it removed. First on light-commercial equipment: the condenser is sized for duty rather than for margin, and it is mounted where it collects the most.
- A condenser fan that has stopped — The coil can be spotless and still shed no heat if the fan beside it is not turning. Heat rejection is where a running machine quietly fails, so the coil is eliminated before anything internal is suspected.
- Ambient temperature outside what the unit was rated for — Refrigeration is rated against surrounding air. These are installed in back rooms, shops and garages where the air is warmer and dirtier than the rating assumed.
- A door that is not actually sealing — A gasket that has taken a set, a door resting against the latch rather than closed, or a shelf holding the door open by a hair will warm a cabinet without any other fault present.
Check in this order, and why
- Put a hand on the rear grille or the condenser area — Strong heat means the system is working and the problem is heat rejection.
- Put a thermometer in each compartment overnight — One reading tells you little; two compartments over a night tells you which system is failing.
- Check the gap behind and above the cabinet — A unit in a tight alcove is re-breathing its own warm air.
- Look for an air vent buried behind food — Cold air has to leave the vent before it can reach anything.
The owner-side procedure
- Empty the door and check the gasket all the way round — Wash the gasket, warm any section that has taken a set with a cloth, and confirm the door pulls itself shut from a hand-width open.

- Unload the interior enough to clear every vent — Pull items away from the rear wall and the vent openings, then leave the unit closed for a full day before judging it.
- STOP at the point where a panel or a meter is needed — Testing a fan motor, a defrost heater or a sensor means live terminals behind a panel.

Move a full-size cabinet with help rather than alone: they are top-heavy on wheels and they catch on flooring. Unplug before touching anything behind a panel, and remember stored charge remains after the supply is cut.
Where the owner side ends
If the coil is clean, the doors seal, the vents are clear and a day has passed with no improvement, the next tests are behind a panel with a meter. Call sooner if the freezer has thawed, because food safety sets the clock rather than the fault does.
