What this usually is
Most noise complaints on a Candor refrigerator resolve to something touching something else. Identify the compartment the sound lives in and the list of candidates drops from a dozen to two. That puts the unit is not level or not sitting still at the top of the list here and tubing, a drip tray or the drain pan touching something at the bottom.
What the machine is doing
- A whirring or chirping that stops when the door opens — The evaporator fan is switched by the door.
- A loud hum or rumble from low at the back — That is the compressor compartment — the compressor itself, its mounts, or the condenser fan beside it.
- NEAR MISS — a squeal that appears only when the door is opened — That is a hinge, not a running part, and it takes a drop of lubricant rather than a service call.
Likely causes on this kind of machine
- The unit is not level or not sitting still — A cabinet on uneven feet rocks on its own vibration. Light-commercial cabinets need their stated clearance on every side, and they are almost always installed tighter than that.
- The condenser fan blade fouling or out of balance — Down at the back with the compressor, this fan collects dust, bag ties and pet hair, and anything it touches turns into a repeating tick or a rattle. First on light-commercial equipment: the condenser is sized for duty rather than for margin, and it is mounted where it collects the most.
- The evaporator fan or its blade catching ice — Behind the freezer rear panel. Air distribution decides what the owner feels, so a blocked path outranks the components behind it.
- Tubing, a drip tray or the drain pan touching something — A line pushed against the cabinet during an install or a delivery hands the compressor a path to broadcast through, and the noise sounds far worse than the cause.
The diagnostic order
- Stand at the back with the unit running — If the sound is louder at the rear it lives in the compressor compartment, which removes half the candidate list at once.
- Put a hand flat on the cabinet side while it runs — Vibration you can feel points at mounting and levelling rather than at a bearing.
- Note the time of day the sound appears — A sound on a schedule is usually defrost or the ice maker rather than a fault.
What to try yourself
- Level the cabinet and load the front feet — Adjust the feet until the unit does not rock and the doors close themselves.
Tools: adjustable spanner, spirit level
- Check the drip tray is seated in its runners — A tray that has been knocked out of position buzzes against the compressor mount.
Tools: torch
- STOP before removing the freezer rear panel — Getting to the evaporator fan means a panel, live terminals behind it and a fan that will run in your hand.
Power, panels and what not to do
Safety
Keep hands out of the compressor compartment and away from any fan while the cabinet is plugged in — the control can start a fan without warning. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.
When this stops being a home repair
Anything you can reach without a panel is yours. The moment the sound is behind the rear wall of the freezer or inside the compressor compartment, it is metered work. A grinding sound alongside a cabinet that has stopped getting cold should be treated as urgent rather than as noise.

What this page does not cover
This page is generalized across Candor refrigerator families and model lines. Wiring colours, torque figures and board part numbers are deliberately not here — they differ by family. A family- or model-specific page, where one exists, is linked below and is the more specific answer.
