Bosch Oven Error Codes — Complete Fault Code Reference & Troubleshooting
Bosch ovens use alphanumeric error codes displayed on the control panel when the system detects a fault condition. Unlike Bosch dishwashers (which use simple E## format), Bosch oven codes can include letter-number combinations that reference specific subsystems. The same codes appear across the BSH platform — Thermador and Gaggenau ovens share Bosch's diagnostic architecture.
Accessing Stored Error Codes
On most Bosch wall ovens (HBL series) and ranges (HGI series):
- Turn the oven off completely
- Simultaneously press and hold the two outermost buttons on the control panel for 3–5 seconds
- The display enters service/diagnostic mode
- Stored fault codes display — use the control dial or arrow buttons to scroll through history
- Record all codes before exiting
- To exit: press and hold any button for 3 seconds, or turn off power

Critical Error Codes
E011 / E012 — Temperature Sensor Open/Short
- E011: Temperature sensor circuit open (disconnected or probe broken)
- E012: Temperature sensor circuit shorted (probe wires touching or internal short)
- Root cause: The RTD sensor probe (mounted in upper rear oven wall) has failed. At room temperature, it should read 1080–1100 ohms
- Fix: Replace the temperature sensor probe. Access from inside the oven (1–2 mounting screws) and disconnect wiring behind the rear panel
E031 — Oven Temperature Exceeded Maximum
- Meaning: The sensor detected temperature above the safe maximum threshold (typically above 590°F in normal mode or above 950°F during self-clean)
- Causes: Temperature sensor reading incorrectly low (triggering heater to overshoot), control relay stuck closed (heater won't shut off), or actual overheating event
- Immediate action: Turn off the oven at the breaker. Do not restart until the cause is identified
- Diagnosis: Test the sensor resistance and verify the control board relays aren't welded closed
E111 — Communication Error Between Boards
- Meaning: The UI (user interface) board and the main control board cannot communicate properly
- Causes: Ribbon cable between boards damaged or loose, connector corrosion, or board failure
- Fix: Reseat the ribbon cable connector between the boards. If the cable is damaged, replace it. If reseating doesn't resolve, the UI board or main board has failed
E115 / E116 — Key Stuck / Button Press Error
- Meaning: A button on the control panel is registering as continuously pressed
- Causes: Liquid intrusion behind the control panel (steam from cooking), physical damage to the button membrane, or a failed touch sensor
- Fix: Clean the control panel surface and edges. If moisture intrusion is suspected, allow the panel to dry thoroughly. Persistent error requires UI board replacement
E301 / E302 — Door Lock Motor Failure
- Meaning: The self-clean door lock motor failed to engage (E301) or release (E302)
- Causes: Door lock motor burned out, lock mechanism mechanically jammed, bimetal strip not actuating
- Fix: The Bosch self-clean lock uses a bimetal strip that bends at 300°C (572°F) to mechanically engage the lock. If the motor fails, the manual bimetal backup should still work during self-clean. For E302 (won't unlock after self-clean), wait for full cooling — the lock releases only below approximately 200°C
E305 — Door Not Closed Properly
- Meaning: The door switch doesn't register "closed" when the door appears shut
- Causes: Misaligned door, worn hinge springs, door switch failure, or food debris preventing full closure
- Fix: Inspect door alignment (Bosch oven doors open 15 degrees, then lift at the hinge locks for removal). Clean the door switch contact area. Replace the switch if it doesn't make contact with the door fully closed
Gas-Specific Codes (HGI Range Series)
F1 / E143 — Igniter Not Drawing Sufficient Current
- Meaning: The igniter is energized but not reaching the amperage threshold to open the gas safety valve (typically 3.2A minimum)
- Fix: Replace the oven igniter — even if it glows, insufficient amperage means the gas valve won't open
F2 — Oven Overtemperature During Gas Operation
- Meaning: Similar to E031 but specific to gas operation — the safety thermostat detected excessive temperature
- Fix: Check gas valve regulation, verify igniter timing, inspect the safety thermostat
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas ovens involve live gas lines — a loose connection creates explosion and carbon monoxide risk. Electric ovens run on 240V circuits. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Resetting Error Codes
Soft Reset
- Press and hold Cancel or the off button for 5 seconds
- If the code clears, it was a transient condition — monitor for recurrence
Hard Reset
- Turn off the oven breaker for 5 full minutes
- Restore power
- If the code returns immediately, the underlying condition persists and requires repair
Clearing Stored History (After Repair)
In diagnostic mode:
- Navigate to the stored error code display
- Press and hold the clear/reset function (varies by model)
- This clears the history but won't prevent new codes if the condition still exists

Error Codes During Self-Clean
Self-clean mode operates at approximately 880°F (470°C) — an extreme environment that stresses all components. It's normal for the self-clean cycle to surface latent issues that weren't apparent during normal cooking:
- Door lock errors (E301/E302) — the lock mechanism is only tested during self-clean
- Overtemperature (E031) — thermal fuses may trip if insulation is degraded
- Sensor errors (E011) — the sensor operates at the extreme end of its range during self-clean
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

When to Call a Professional
- Any overtemperature code (E031, F2) — requires verification that the oven can regulate temperature safely
- Gas-related codes on HGI models — gas valve and igniter work should be done professionally
- Door lock stuck during/after self-clean — forcing the door risks damage to the lock mechanism and oven frame
- Communication errors (E111) between boards — requires board-level diagnosis
