The short answer
Owners of this freezer land here for one reason, and water that follows a defrost is meltwater, and the question is only why it did not drain. The drain, the plug and the levelling cover almost all of it, and all three are free to check.
What you actually see
- Water standing in the base of the cabinet inside — Standing water inside means the drain has closed.
- Ice across the floor of the compartment — A sheet of ice under the food is meltwater that froze before it could drain.
- Damp on the outside of the cabinet with no puddle — Outside damp on a cold cabinet in a humid room is condensation.
- A smell of wet insulation with no visible water — Water trapped in the base produces a smell before it produces a puddle.
Causes, ranked for this freezer
- Drain plug loose or its seal perished — Check this first: it produces a front puddle with an otherwise perfect cabinet, which is confusing until you know where to look. It is worth being sure about this one rather than half-sure, since everything after it assumes a verdict.
- Defrost drain blocked — Check this second: a freezer produces meltwater whenever it defrosts, and it all has to leave through one small outlet that food debris and ice close regularly. This is the entry most often blamed correctly and diagnosed carelessly, so take the extra minute.
- Drain tube split or displaced behind the cabinet — Third in order: it produces a back-only puddle with a clear drain inside, which is otherwise a confusing combination. Confirm it before moving on, because the entries below read differently once it is ruled out.
What to check, in order
- First — the drain plug — Look at the plug at the base of the cabinet. Wetness around it rather than inside the cabinet identifies it immediately.
- Second — the drain outlet — Flush it with warm water from a baster or syringe until it runs freely.

- Step 1. Measure the compartment temperature — Leave a thermometer in the cabinet for several hours. Water plus a warm compartment is a cooling fault, not a leak.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and close the water supply valve before you loosen a hose. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water and a live cabinet are the combination that turns a small leak into an electrical fault, so power and water both come off before the towels come out.
When this becomes a service call
Draw the line by the tool the next step requires, not by how the freezer looks. A drain tube buried in the cabinet foam, or a base pan that has cracked, is beyond the owner side of this job.
