The short answer
The short answer for a Black+Decker freezer: a leak is found with a sheet of paper in about ten minutes, and half of them turn out to be ice rather than rubber. Cleaning, clearing ice, levelling and reseating are all owner work; a split gasket is a part.
What you actually see
- Frost forming along one edge of the opening — A local frost line marks exactly where humid air is entering.
- The seal is hard, flat or cracked — Rubber that no longer springs back cannot bridge the gap it used to.
- Packages nearest the opening are frosted — Frost concentrated at the front of the load points at the seal rather than at the cooling.
- A paper strip pulls out freely at one point — The paper test finds a leak faster than any inspection.
Causes, ranked for this freezer
- Gasket compressed flat with age — Most likely — the seal works by springing back, and once the rubber has taken a set it cannot bridge the gap it was designed to close. If this is the answer, the rest of the list stops mattering entirely.
- Frost buildup under the seal — Common — it is self-perpetuating and it is why a small leak on a freezer gets worse quickly rather than staying stable. Where this checks out clean, treat the next entry as the working theory rather than a possibility.
- Something inside holding the lid open — Regular — a package standing proud of the rim or a basket sitting high holds a chest lid a fraction open with no visible gap. A clean result here does not just remove one part; it removes everything that depends on it.
What to check, in order
- First — the gasket profile — Do the paper test every hand-width around the whole opening and mark where the paper slides freely.
- Second — the sealing face for ice — Run a finger along the sealing face and the lip it meets. Any ice there is holding the seal open.

- Step 1. Check the top of the load — Remove any package or basket standing above the rim, then close the lid slowly and watch the last inch for early contact.
