The short answer
The short answer for a Black+Decker freezer: the cabinet is losing to its load or its surroundings far more often than it is losing refrigerant. The load, the seal and the frost layer are all owner checks and all free; the sealed circuit is the only part with no owner step.
What you actually see
- Ice cream has gone soft but is not liquid — A compartment sitting just above its target shows in the softest item first, long before anything thaws.
- The compressor runs without ever stopping — Continuous running means the machine is asking for cold it cannot deliver.
- Heavy frost on one wall and none elsewhere — An uneven frost pattern marks where humid air is entering or where air has stopped moving.

- Overpacked so air cannot circulate — Most likely — a freezer packed to the roof has no path for air between the evaporator and the food, and the top of the load stays warm while the bottom is fine. If this is the answer, the rest of the list stops mattering entirely.
- Frost buildup on the evaporator — Common — frost accumulates faster than owners expect on a unit opened several times a day, and it is the classic slow drift in a compact freezer. Where this checks out clean, treat the next entry as the working theory rather than a possibility.
- Door or lid seal leaking — Regular — warm humid air entering continuously is a load that never stops, and a small cabinet has no reserve to absorb it. A clean result here does not just remove one part; it removes everything that depends on it.
What to check, in order
- First — how the cabinet is loaded — Look for vents at the back or side walls. Anything pressed against a vent is stopping the air that keeps the far end cold.
- Second — the frost thickness inside — Look at the walls and the shelf coils. A layer you can bury a fingertip in is enough to matter.

- Step 1. Clean the condenser or the cabinet sides — Unplug the unit. Brush and vacuum a rear coil until the fins show, or clear anything stacked against the warm side panels of a skin-condenser cabinet.

Before you open anything
Safety
Pull the plug or trip the breaker first. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Treat the sealed system as off limits: the tubing carries pressure, the compressor terminals carry a stored charge, and neither is diagnosed by opening it.
When this becomes a service call
Draw the line by the tool the next step requires, not by how the freezer looks. Anything that would involve the refrigerant circuit is licensed work from the outset; there is no owner version of that repair.
