What no cooling usually means on a Midea freezer
On a standalone Midea freezer, the two commonest causes are where it is installed and how much frost it is carrying. A freezer in an unheated garage or porch can stop calling for cooling once the surrounding air drops far enough, and a manual-defrost model that has never been cleared loses capacity as the frost thickens. Both look like a failure and neither is one.
What you are seeing
- The compartment drifts warm during cold weather and recovers when it warms up.
- Frost has built into a thick layer on the walls and the lid.
- The lid or door does not sit flush, or is held up by a bag.
- The appliance runs constantly and still cannot hold temperature.
- Not this fault: The cabinet is silent and nothing runs at all - that is a supply fault, not a cooling one.
- Not this fault: There is water on the floor but the contents are frozen - read the leak or drain guidance instead.
Most likely causes, in order
- Installed somewhere colder than the appliance is rated for — Why ranked: First for any freezer in a garage, porch or outbuilding. Below the rated ambient the control stops calling for cooling and the compartment drifts.
- Heavy frost reducing capacity on a manual-defrost model — Why ranked: Second because it builds slowly, it is entirely owner-serviceable, and it makes every other fault on the list worse while it is there.
- Lid or door seal not closing, or held open by contents — Why ranked: Ranked here because it is the reason the frost built in the first place, and it is corrected without any parts.
- Thermostat set wrong, or a demonstration mode enabled — Why ranked: Free to check, and it explains an appliance that lights and runs but never gets properly cold.
- Condenser blocked, or the sealed system — Why ranked: Last. A sealed-system fault leaves the cabinet silent or running without ever cooling, which is a different presentation.
What to check, in order
- Note where the appliance lives and how cold that space gets. — Because: Rank one explains a freezer that fails in winter and recovers in spring, and nothing else does.
- Open it and look at the thickness of the frost on the walls. — Because: Rank two is visible, free to fix, and it changes the behaviour of everything else.
- Close the lid and check it seals all the way round without anything holding it. — Because: Rank three is the reason rank two happened, and it costs nothing.
- Check the thermostat setting and look for a demonstration indicator. — Because: Rank four is free and it explains an appliance that runs without ever getting cold.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the freezer or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (-18 °C) or below; anything softer than that for long should be treated with caution. Never chip frost out with a blade - a pierced refrigerant line ends the appliance. Never use a heat gun inside the cabinet; the liner melts.
When this becomes a service call
The appliance cannot hold 0 °F (-18 °C) after a full defrost in a normally heated space. Frost returns thickly within weeks of a defrost with the seal confirmed good. The cabinet runs continuously and never reaches temperature. The appliance is silent with the supply confirmed live.
