The short answer

What you actually see
- The lid or door does not sit flat when closed — A visible gap anywhere around the opening is a leak you can see.
- Condensation running down the outside of the cabinet — Outside condensation on a cold cabinet in a humid room is common and is not always a seal fault.
- The compressor runs far longer than it used to — A leaking seal is a load that never goes away.
- The seal has lifted out of its channel — A gasket standing proud of its groove looks attached and seals nothing.
Causes, ranked for this freezer
- Frost buildup under the seal — Check this first: it is self-perpetuating and it is why a small leak on a freezer gets worse quickly rather than staying stable. It is worth being sure about this one rather than half-sure, since everything after it assumes a verdict.
- Gasket compressed flat with age — Check this second: the seal works by springing back, and once the rubber has taken a set it cannot bridge the gap it was designed to close. This is the entry most often blamed correctly and diagnosed carelessly, so take the extra minute.
- Something inside holding the lid open — Third in order: on a cabinet that seals under its own weight this is enough to leak continuously, and it is invisible until you look for it. Confirm it before moving on, because the entries below read differently once it is ruled out.
What to check, in order
- First — the sealing face for ice — Run a finger along the sealing face and the lip it meets. Any ice there is holding the seal open.
- Second — the gasket profile — Do the paper test every hand-width around the whole opening and mark where the paper slides freely.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. These cabinets are heavier and more top-loaded than they look: move one with a second person, walk it rather than dragging it, and never let it rest on the door.
When this becomes a service call
Draw the line by the tool the next step requires, not by how the freezer looks. A lid that will not sit flat after levelling, or a hinge with play in it, is a fitting job rather than a seal job.
