The short answer
Owners of this freezer land here for one reason, and a machine that runs constantly without reaching temperature is fighting a load, and the load is usually findable. Everything worth checking first costs nothing. If the cabinet still cannot reach temperature with a clean condenser and no frost, that is a service call.
What you actually see
- Packages are frosted on the outside — Surface frost on wrapping means the compartment has warmed and refrozen at least once.
- The cabinet is silent and slowly warming — No compressor sound at all is a different fault from a compressor that cannot keep up.
- The outside of the cabinet is hot along one side — Warm sides are normal on units with the condenser in the skin; hot is not.
Causes, ranked for this freezer
- Condenser surface blocked or dusty — Check this first: heat has to leave somewhere, and on a small cabinet that somewhere is a small area with no spare capacity when it is dirty or covered. It is worth being sure about this one rather than half-sure, since everything after it assumes a verdict.
- Door or lid seal leaking — Check this second: warm humid air entering continuously is a load that never stops, and a small cabinet has no reserve to absorb it. This is the entry most often blamed correctly and diagnosed carelessly, so take the extra minute.
- Ambient temperature outside the unit rating — Third in order: a cold room can be as much a problem as a hot one on a cabinet whose thermostat senses room air rather than compartment air. Confirm it before moving on, because the entries below read differently once it is ruled out.
What to check, in order
- First — the condenser surface — Unplug the unit, pull it out and brush the rear coil clear, or feel along the sides for the warm band that shows where the skin condenser runs.
- Second — the seal all the way round — Look for a frost line on the seal itself. Frost forms exactly where the warm air is arriving.

- Step 1. Paper-test the seal — Close the lid or door on a sheet of paper and pull it out. Repeat every hand-width. Free-sliding paper marks where warm air is getting in.

- Step 2. Measure the frost layer — Look at the walls and any exposed coils. Frost thick enough to bury a fingertip is insulating the evaporator and needs a full defrost.

- Step 3. Check the control setting and its sensing bulb — Set the dial to its coldest position, then look for the sensing bulb inside the cabinet and confirm it is still clipped where it belongs.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The cooling circuit is sealed and under pressure: do not cut, bend, kink or unbraze any tubing, and do not attempt to add or recover refrigerant — that is licensed work and the tubing is not repairable with hand tools.
When this becomes a service call
Draw the line by the tool the next step requires, not by how the freezer looks. A click-and-pause pattern at the back means the start components are the next thing to measure, and measuring them means the machine energized with the cover off.
