The short answer

Causes, ranked for this freezer
- Something touching the back or side panels — Check this first: compact cabinets get pushed into corners where the back and one side are both in contact with something, doubling the opportunities. It is worth being sure about this one rather than half-sure, since everything after it assumes a verdict.
- Loose internal basket, shelf or divider — Check this second: a chest cabinet carries wire baskets that hang on the rim, and a basket sitting crooked buzzes against the shell. This is the entry most often blamed correctly and diagnosed carelessly, so take the extra minute.
- Condenser fan fouled where one is fitted — Third in order: a fouled blade ticks in time with the compressor, which is why the compressor gets the blame. Confirm it before moving on, because the entries below read differently once it is ruled out.

Safety
Kill the supply at the plug or the breaker, then check nothing can be switched back on by somebody else. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If a step only makes sense with the machine running, it is a technician step and not one of these.
