The short answer

- The top shelf of the fridge freezes while the crisper warms — The signature airflow fault of a top-freezer: cold arriving and not distributing.

- Both compartments warming at a similar rate — The condenser, the defrost system or the sealed system.
- A sheet of frost behind the freezer rear panel — A stalled defrost cycle, with the ice now blocking the coil.
- NEAR MISS - silent and warming — Nothing is running, which is a supply or start-relay fault.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- Frost restricting the duct or damper from the freezer — First on this layout, because everything the fridge receives falls through one opening from the compartment above.

- Open the freezer and listen for the evaporator fan — Third. A silent fan with a cold freezer explains a warm fridge completely.
- Look at the freezer rear panel for a frost sheet — Fourth. A sheet rather than a dusting moves you to the defrost system.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice out of the duct or off the evaporator with a metal tool - the tubing is soft aluminium and a puncture ends the cabinet. Do not run a heat gun inside the liner to speed a defrost.

When to call a technician
Call once the outlet is clear, the fan runs and a manual defrost has restored cooling only for the ice to return, because repeated icing is a defrost heater, thermostat or control fault. Call immediately if you see oil at the compressor or smell burning.
