- NEAR MISS - the cabinet is silent and warming — Nothing is running, which is a supply or start-relay fault, not a cooling fault.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- Frost or ice blocking the duct between the compartments — First on a bottom-freezer, because everything the fridge gets has to pass through one duct and that duct is the coldest path in the cabinet.
- Evaporator fan not running — Second, and indistinguishable from the first at the shelf: both leave the freezer cold and the fridge warm.
- Freezer drawer not sealing on its rails — Third, and platform-specific: a drawer held proud by a food package admits humid air continuously and feeds the ice doing the blocking.
- Condenser starved of air — Fourth, and the leading cause when both compartments warm together rather than one.
- Stalled defrost or sealed-system fault — Last. Both need instruments, and both are less common than the four above.
Check in this order, and why
- Check the freezer temperature before the fridge temperature — First, because the answer routes the entire diagnosis down one of two branches.
- Hold the drawer switch in and listen for the evaporator fan — Second. No fan with a cold freezer explains a warm fridge completely.
- Empty the freezer drawer and look at the rear panel for frost — Third. A sheet rather than a dusting moves you to the defrost system.
- Check the drawer closes square and the gasket meets the cabinet — Fourth, and the cause most often missed because it looks like an inconvenience rather than a fault.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice out of the duct or off the evaporator with a knife or screwdriver - the tubing is soft aluminium and a puncture ends the cabinet. Empty the freezer drawer before working at the base, because a loaded drawer pulls the whole cabinet forward.

When to call a technician
Call once the drawer seals, the fan runs and a manual defrost has restored cooling only for the ice to return, because repeated icing is a defrost heater, thermostat or control fault. Call immediately if you see oil at the compressor or smell burning - oil outside the tubing means the system is open.
