When the BFFD line warms up while the compressor is clearly working, the defrost cycle is the first suspect. The platform uses one evaporator for both compartments, which means a stalled defrost frosts the coil, airflow stops, and the fresh-food side warms first while the freezer stays acceptable for days. That order of symptoms is the family signature.
The observations that matter
- The door was left open for a long period recently — On each of the models covered here, a single long opening can load an evaporator with enough moisture to ice it, and the effects arrive days later.
- The condenser area is thick with dust or pet hair — A matted coil cannot shed heat, so the compressor runs longer for less effect and the cabinet loses ground slowly.
- Cooling improved after the unit was emptied and defrosted — Conclusive for an airflow cause, and what happens over the following weeks names the defrost control. It is the same on all the models in the table on this page.
- NEAR MISS: the cabinet is silent and nothing is cold — That is a no-power or start fault rather than an airflow one, and the running-but-not-cooling logic on this page does not apply.
The causes in likelihood order
- A frosted evaporator from a stalled defrost cycle — First on the BFFD line because the adaptive defrost on this platform degrades before it fails: the ice builds quietly over weeks, airflow falls away, and the owner notices the warmth long before they notice the frost. The same is true of each model covered here.
- A failed evaporator fan motor — Second because the fan sits behind the freezer rear panel and is the part that wears on these cabinets. It produces the same warm fresh-food compartment with no frost sheet to show for it, which is how the two are told apart. This applies to the whole line rather than to one model.
- Blocked vents from overpacking — Boxes pressed against the rear freezer wall or the fresh-food return vent stop circulation with nothing wrong with the machine. It is the most common cause that needs no repair at all.
- High ambient temperature around the cabinet — A unit boxed into a warm alcove, or standing beside an oven, loses its margin entirely. Nothing is faulty and the cabinet still will not hold temperature.
- A failed defrost heater or thermostat — Last because it presents exactly like the frost build above it and can only be separated with meter work behind the freezer panel. Manually clearing the ice restores cooling for a few weeks either way, which is why the recurrence is the diagnostic.
The order to work in
- Listen at the freezer for the evaporator fan — First because it separates the two likeliest causes on the BFFD line before any tool comes out, and because the fan is audible with the freezer door open and the switch held. Every model in this family behaves this way.
- Look at the freezer rear panel for a frost sheet — Second: a solid layer confirms the airflow cause when the fan is running, and its thickness tells you how long the defrost has been stalled.
- Hold a hand at the fresh-food vents — On the models listed in the table on this page, moving air means circulation is intact and the fault is elsewhere; still air with a running compressor names the fault immediately.
Before you open anything
Safety
Isolate the cabinet at the socket or the breaker before the freezer rear panel comes off, and leave it isolated while you work. Never use a sharp tool or a heat gun to clear ice from an evaporator: the tubing is thin-walled and a puncture ends the appliance.

The service boundary
The line on these models is the freezer rear panel: everything in front of it is an owner check, and everything behind it is service work. Call immediately if you smell burning or see oil at the compressor, because oil outside the tubing means the system is open. That is true of every model this family spans.
