The answer first
No ice from the BFFD line is almost always a supply problem. The freezer temperature has to be low enough for the mould to release, the water has to arrive, and the shut-off arm has to be down. A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (-18 °C) or below, and an ice maker needs roughly that to cycle at all.
What this looks like
- The bin is empty and the maker never cycles — Across the models this page covers, no harvest sound at all over a day points at the arm, the supply or the module rather than at anything intermittent.
- Cubes are hollow, small or crescent-shaped — Partial fill, which means water is arriving but not enough of it, and points at the valve or a partly frozen fill tube.
- A ridge of ice has formed at the back of the freezer — Water spraying past the mould from a misaligned or partly frozen fill tube, which names the cause precisely. That is true of every model this family spans.
- NEAR MISS: the whole freezer is warming — Then ice production is a symptom, not the fault, and the cooling-failure page for this family applies.
Most likely causes first
- A frozen fill tube — First on the BFFD line because the tube delivers water into a compartment held below freezing, so any slow fill or dribble freezes in place and blocks every later cycle. It is also the cause that clears with no part at all. It is the same on all the models in the table on this page.
- The shut-off arm held up — Second because it is free to check and because a package leaning against the arm produces a maker that appears completely dead while being in perfect order. It does not vary across the models listed on this page.
- A saddle valve that has partly closed or silted — Older installations tee off the cold supply with a small valve that silts up and restricts flow gradually, which produces shrinking cubes long before it produces none.
- Cubes fusing in the bin and jamming the harvest — A bin of partly melted and refrozen cubes locks together, and the maker stalls against the mass rather than failing electrically.
- A failed inlet valve or ice maker module — Last on this platform because every cause above it imitates it exactly and costs nothing to exclude. A module replaced before the fill tube and the tap were checked is the commonest wasted repair on these cabinets.
Where to start, and why
- Check the shut-off arm is down and nothing is leaning on it — First on the BFFD line because it costs nothing and because a package against the arm is the single most common reason a maker appears dead. This applies to the whole line rather than to one model.
- Look for a slab or a plug of ice in the mould — Second: clearing it by hand restores cycling immediately and tells you whether the fault recurs, which is the real diagnostic.
- Find the supply tap and confirm it is fully open — Third, because it is usually under a sink and is closed during unrelated plumbing work more often than anyone expects. The models in the table behave the same way here.
- Pull the cabinet forward and follow the supply line — A kink within a hand span of the cabinet is the usual finding, and it explains shrinking cubes before it explains none at all.
Read this before you start
Safety
Switch off at the breaker before any panel comes off; stored charge can remain after the supply is cut. Use warm water or a hair dryer on a low setting to clear a frozen fill tube, never a flame and never a heat gun at full power.

When to stop and call
Book service when a cleared slab of ice returns within days, when cubes stay hollow after the line and tap are proven clear, or when the maker cycles audibly and no water arrives at all. Every model in this family behaves this way.
