The short answer
A Beko BAF refrigerator that runs without keeping food cold is nearly always losing cold rather than failing to make it. The family is a single upright cabinet with one cooling circuit and one door, so there is no second compartment to compare against - which means the diagnosis leans on the door seal, the condenser's air supply and the frost pattern on the rear wall.
What you observe
- The compressor runs almost continuously and the cabinet is still warm — Work is being done and none of it is reaching the food.
- A solid sheet of frost on the rear wall inside — A stalled defrost cycle: the ice has become the blockage.
- Items at the back freeze while the door shelves stay warm — Air is not circulating, so the cabinet stratifies instead of holding one temperature.
- The back and sides of the cabinet are hot to the touch — Normal to a point, but hot with a warm interior means the heat has nowhere to go.
- NEAR MISS - the cabinet is silent and warm — Nothing is running, which is a supply or start-relay fault rather than a cooling fault.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- Condenser starved of room air — First on a freestanding cabinet with no dedicated air path. A wall-tight install, an alcove or a neighbouring oven all produce this.
- Door gasket not sealing along its full height — Second, and usually alignment rather than wear: a tall door racks and then grips at the top while standing off at the bottom.
- Stalled defrost leaving the evaporator iced — Third. With one evaporator there is no alternative path, so ice on the coil is felt throughout the cabinet.
- Evaporator fan not running — Fourth, and the explanation when the back freezes while the door shelves stay warm.
- Sealed-system or compressor fault — Last, least common, and the only cause no owner check will settle.
Check in this order, and why
- Measure where the cabinet actually sits — First, because it separates a partial failure from a total one and tells you whether to move the food now.
- Pull the cabinet clear of the wall and check what is beside it — Second, and free: give the back and sides room to breathe for a day before suspecting a part.
- Test the gasket with a sheet of paper at top and bottom — Third. Grip at the top and release at the bottom means a racked door, which hinges can usually correct.
- Look at the rear wall inside for a frost sheet — Fourth. A sheet rather than a dusting moves the diagnosis to the defrost system.
Before you open anything

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off the evaporator with a knife or screwdriver - the tubing is soft aluminium and a puncture turns a defrost fault into a sealed-system replacement. Do not use a heat gun inside the liner to speed a defrost.

When to call a technician
Call once the cabinet has air, the gasket seals and a manual defrost has restored cooling only for the ice to return, because a defrost cycle that stalls repeatedly is a heater, thermostat or control fault. Call immediately if you see oil at the compressor or smell burning - oil outside the tubing means the system is open.
