The MAS answer in short
An Avanti MAS washer that does nothing when you press start is far more often a supply or a door-latch problem than a control failure. These machines will not begin a cycle until the lid or door is proved shut, and they will not prove it with a worn latch, a swollen gasket or a hinge that has dropped.
What this looks like in use
- It powers up, then goes quiet as soon as you press start — Across the MAS line, a permissive has dropped out — most often the lid or door proof, sometimes water.
- It hums or clicks once and then stops — For the MAS line, a latch or a motor trying and failing, or a control retrying a step it cannot complete.
- The door or lid does not feel properly shut — On this family, a dropped hinge, a swollen gasket or a worn strike leaves the latch short of its proof position.
- The breaker has tripped, or trips when you press start — Where MAS models are concerned, that is an electrical fault in the machine or an overloaded circuit, and it is not something to keep resetting.
- The lid or door does not close with a definite click — On the MAS models listed below, a worn catch, a strike out of line, or a machine standing unevenly so the opening is no longer square.
- NEAR MISS — it starts but never fills — A fill problem is its own diagnosis. Check the taps and the inlet screens rather than the start circuit.
What actually fails on MAS models, in order
- No supply at the outlet, the plug or the breaker — It leads because a dead panel can only mean supply, and a lamp in the same socket settles it in seconds.
- A door or lid latch not proving shut — It sits here because latches wear, gaskets swell and hinges drop — and because the symptom is exactly "nothing happens". That ranking holds across the MAS line.
- A motor or pump thermal cut-out that has opened — After a heavy or jammed load the motor protector opens and resets only when it has cooled.
- A failed control board or a broken harness — It comes last because every cause above imitates it and costs less to eliminate. Nothing in the MAS line changes that order.
What to look at first, second, third
- Test the outlet with something you know works — On the MAS line, a lamp or a phone charger in the same socket separates the machine from the wall in seconds.
- Look at the breaker or fuse for that circuit — A breaker that has tripped once may be a one-off; one that trips on start is an electrical fault.
- Check both taps are open and both hoses are clear — On MAS models in particular, a machine waiting for water can look completely idle while it waits.
- Close the lid or door firmly and press start while holding it in — For the MAS line, if it runs with pressure on it, the catch, the strike or the way the machine sits is the cause.
Before you begin
Safety
Power off at the plug or the breaker first — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A repeatedly tripping breaker means an electrical fault in the appliance, not a nuisance to be reset: switch it off and have it looked at. Every latch and switch stays wired as found.

When to hand it over
Call once the socket is proved live, the plug fuse is sound, both taps are open, the lid closes crisply and no lock is set — and it still will not start. What is left is the lid switch, the timer or the control board, all of which need a meter on live terminals behind a panel.
