Start here, for VF models
An ice maker is a small machine bolted into a cold box, and it needs three things to work: water at pressure, a compartment at or below 0 °F (−18 °C), and a working harvest cycle. On an Avanti VF refrigerator the useful diagnostic order follows exactly that chain, cheapest link first.
What you notice first
- Cubes fuse into one lump in the bin — On the VF line, a fused lump is a temperature story, and it usually ends with a full defrost and a fresh start.
- You can hear the fill valve buzz but no water comes — On VF models, a buzzing valve with a dry mould is a supply fault almost every time.
- The ice tastes or smells wrong — On a VF model, stale water in a line that has not been used for weeks, or an unlined bin absorbing cabinet odours.
- The bin is empty and the mould is dry — On VF models, a dry mould is the clearest possible pointer: look at the valve, the line and the pressure.
- The mould fills but the cubes come out hollow or small — Where VF models are concerned, the fill is arriving but the freeze is not finishing, which points at temperature rather than at water.
- NEAR MISS — water on the floor as well as no ice — A leaking fill line produces both. Read the water-leak page for your model line first, because that one is urgent.
What goes wrong here, most frequent first
- A closed, kinked or frozen water supply — First, because it is the most common and the cheapest: a saddle valve nobody opened fully, or a fill line pinched behind the cabinet.
- A blocked or failing water inlet valve — Screens silt up and solenoids weaken; both produce a partial fill first and no fill later. That holds for every VF model listed here.
- A water filter long past its life — A clogged filter starves the valve and gives you small hollow cubes on the way to none at all.
- A failed ice-maker module or its wiring — It comes last because everything above it imitates it perfectly and costs less to rule out. The VF models in the table below are no exception.
Where to start, and what follows
- Look at the bin-full arm or sensor first — On VF models, clear the bin, make sure the arm swings freely, and give it a cycle before going further.
- Follow the fill line from the machine to the valve — Kinks behind the cabinet and a half-open saddle valve are the two commonest faults on the whole page.
- Listen for the fill buzz after a harvest — Stand by it after emptying the bin and note what you hear.
- Put a thermometer in the compartment overnight — A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below, and a mould needs that to release.

Safety
Isolate the machine and close the water valve before touching the fill line; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Warm air thaws an ice plug safely, boiling water does not — it splits plastic tubing and turns a free fix into a flood. Leave every switch and interlock exactly as found.

When to hand it over
The owner line here is the bin, the arm, the supply and the temperature. Everything past it is a part in the maker itself, tested with a meter behind a panel. Call sooner if you can see water anywhere near the electrics, because that is an electrical matter rather than an ice one.
