The VF answer in short
The useful question on a noisy Avanti VF refrigerator is not "which part is it" but "does the noise change when the fan stops". Open the door and the evaporator fan cuts; the condenser fan and compressor keep going. That one test splits the possible sources in half, costs nothing, and is where this page starts.
What owners describe
- A high whine that rises and falls with nothing else changing — Across the VF line, a variable-speed fan or compressor changing rate makes this, and so does a dry bearing under load.
- A knock once or twice a day and never otherwise — Within the VF family, almost always the defrost cycle or a normal expansion tick rather than a fault.
- Vibration you can feel in the floor or the worktop — On this family, a cabinet out of level walks on two feet and drums into whatever it is touching.
- The noise stops when you open the door — For the VF line, this is the single most useful test on the page and it takes a second.

What goes wrong here, most frequent first
- A cabinet that is not level or is resting on cabinetry — First, because these are light machines with adjustable feet and they are almost always installed in a hurry into a tight space.
- The condenser fan clipping its shroud or a dust ball — It sits here because you can see it: pull the machine out, take off the rear cover and the contact mark is usually obvious. For VF models the reasoning is identical.
- The evaporator fan dragging on ice or a worn bearing — It ranks here because it is behind the rear panel: cheap part, but a teardown, so it is a service call on most of these cabinets.
- A failing compressor — It comes last because every cheaper cause imitates it, and only a technician with instruments should call it. That ranking holds across the VF line.
The order to work in
- Open the door and listen for the noise to stop — On the VF models listed below, the door switch cuts the evaporator fan, so a noise that dies with the door open is that fan and nothing else.
- Look for a frost sheet on the rear wall inside the freezer — If there is a slab there, treat the defrost problem — the noise is a symptom of it.
- Take everything off the top and away from the back wall — Stacked trays and bottles against the rear are the commonest noise source in a working unit.

Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker before a panel comes off or a hand goes near a fan — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a fan blade that starts while your fingers are in the shroud is the injury this fault actually causes. Do not open the sealed system to chase a noise: that is licensed work.

Call the same day if the noise is accompanied by a burning smell or by a breaker that trips, because neither is a mechanical nuisance.
