The short answer for VF models
An Avanti VF refrigerator that runs without getting cold is almost never a dead compressor. On this kind of machine the airflow path stalls first: the evaporator behind the rear panel ices into a sheet, the fan can no longer push air past it, and the cabinet drifts warm while the unit hums away. What the owner sees
- The cabinet is cool but never really cold — For VF models, a unit that is running and losing the argument — usually airflow or a door that is not sealing rather than a dead compressor.
- Warm air blows from the vents instead of cold — On the VF models listed below, air movement without chill means the cold side of the loop is iced or starved.
- The freezer section still makes ice but the fresh-food side is warm — On a VF model, a split like this points at the duct or the fan between the two sections, not at the compressor.
- The compressor runs and never stops — Across the VF line, continuous running with no cycling off is the same fault seen from the electrical side.

Likely causes for VF models, most common first
- A stalled defrost cycle icing the evaporator — It leads on these cabinets because the evaporator sits directly behind the rear panel with very little clearance, so even a thin sheet closes the air path completely.
- A stopped or dying evaporator fan motor — The fan is the wear part behind the rear panel, and when it stops the cabinet warms with nothing to show for it — no frost sheet, no noise. It is ranked the same way on every VF model.
- A sealed-system or compressor fault — It comes last because everything above it is cheaper, more likely and checkable without a gauge set — and because this one needs a licensed technician.
Check in this order, and why
- Open the door and listen for the circulating fan — On VF models in particular, hold the door switch in if you must — the fan should be audible within a second or two, and silence narrows the list immediately.
- Put a thermometer on a middle shelf and read it after a few hours — For VF models, it turns "feels warm" into a number you can compare, and tells you whether anything you changed helped.
- Listen for whether the compressor ever stops — On this family, a unit that cycles is reaching its setpoint; one that runs continuously is not.
