What this usually is on RM cabinets
An RM unit that hums, runs and stays warm has usually stopped moving heat rather than stopped pumping it. The cause is normally on the outside of the cabinet — dust, clearance, or a door that no longer pulls shut — and only then on the inside. Working the list from the outside in is what keeps this a short job.
How the fault presents
- Ice forming around the door opening — Warm air is reaching a cold surface at the gap, which is a seal answer rather than a cooling one.
- Cold at the bottom of the cabinet and warm at the top — Air is stratifying because nothing is moving it, which is the fan question rather than the refrigerant question.
- The back or the side of the cabinet is hot rather than warm — The condenser is trying to shed heat into air that is not moving past it.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is warm and the unit is completely silent — That is a no-power or start-relay fault rather than a cooling fault, and it is a different article: check the socket, the cord and the breaker first.
The ranked causes for this family
- Condenser coil choked, or no clearance around the cabinet — Heat leaves the refrigerant at the condenser, and a coil packed with dust or a cabinet pushed tight into a recess cannot do it. - Evaporator iced over, so the air path is blocked — Frost belongs on the evaporator; a solid sheet across it does not. Second because it is nearly as common but takes longer to confirm, and confirming it in the wrong order wastes the time the first check would have saved.

The order of checks, and why it is this one
- Before the first step — Give the machine an uninterrupted hour with the door shut and then judge it, because a cabinet that has been open while you looked at it will read warm for reasons that are not the fault.
- Look at the condenser and at the clearance around the cabinet — Dust on the coil and a tight recess produce the same result, and both are visible without a tool.
- Look for a frost sheet on the freezer rear wall — A solid layer rather than a dusting confirms the airflow cause before anything is dismantled.
- Empty the cabinet enough to see its vents — Anything hard against a vent or against the rear wall is a candidate before any part is suspected.
