What is happening, in three sentences
An RMRS refrigerator that runs without getting cold is rarely a dead compressor. On this family the fault is almost always in the heat path rather than in the pump: a condenser that cannot give up its heat, a door that is not sealing, or an evaporator buried in frost. The first two of those need no tools and no panel off.
What this looks like at the cabinet
- The freezer section still works but the fresh-food section does not — Cold is being made and not distributed, which points at the air path rather than the sealed system.
- A sheet of frost on the back wall of the freezer section — Not the usual light dusting but a solid layer, which blocks the air path rather than cooling it.
- The cabinet is warm but the unit is clearly running — You can hear the compressor and feel warmth at the back, and the air inside is still not cold.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is warm and the unit is completely silent — That is a no-power or start-relay fault rather than a cooling fault, and it is a different article: check the socket, the cord and the breaker first.
Causes, most likely first on RMRS models
- Evaporator iced over, so the air path is blocked — Frost belongs on the evaporator; a solid sheet across it does not. First on this family because it needs nothing taken apart — on a cabinet this size it is a look and a listen, and excluding it costs less than five minutes.
- Door seal not sealing, or the door not pulling itself shut — A gasket that has taken a set, a door that has dropped on its hinge, or a shelf holding the door open by a fraction all let room air in faster than the machine can take heat out. Second here, and it is the rank most sensitive to how the cabinet is used — a unit opened all day sees this far sooner than one that is not.
- Condenser coil choked, or no clearance around the cabinet — Heat leaves the refrigerant at the condenser, and a coil packed with dust or a cabinet pushed tight into a recess cannot do it. Third on RMRS: it is still something you can see rather than measure, but it takes the cabinet emptied or moved and the two above it do not.
Work through it in this order
- Where to begin on RMRS models — Three of the causes above can be excluded without a tool, and this order puts every one of them ahead of anything that needs the cabinet moved or a panel off.
- Look for a frost sheet on the freezer rear wall — A solid layer rather than a dusting confirms the airflow cause before anything is dismantled.
- Close the door on a strip of paper and pull — Do it at four points around the frame. A strip that slides out without resistance is the leak.
- Look at the condenser and at the clearance around the cabinet — Dust on the coil and a tight recess produce the same result, and both are visible without a tool.
Safety before diagnosis
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Nothing on this page requires the sealed system to be opened, and nothing on it should be read as permission to do so: the tubing is under pressure, and cutting or unbrazing it is licensed work with licensed tools.

When to call a technician
The honest limit is the rear panel. Behind it are components that need testing rather than looking at, and on a cabinet this size they sit close enough together that a probe in the wrong place breaks something that was working.
