The short answer for RM models
Noise on an RM refrigerator is diagnosed by kind, not by volume. A buzz that changes when you lean on the cabinet is a mounting or levelling fault; a rattle that comes and goes with the compressor is something touching something else; a click every few minutes is a control or a relay doing its job. Only the last of those is ever electrical.
What this looks like at the cabinet
- A rattle from low down at the back of the cabinet — It usually starts a second or two after the compressor does, which is the clue that it is being driven rather than generated.
- A low buzz or hum that rises and falls with the compressor — The pitch is steady while it runs and stops dead when it cycles off.
- Opening the door makes the noise stop — The door switch cuts the evaporator fan, so anything that stops with the door belongs to it.
- A whine that has built up over weeks rather than appearing overnight — A bearing drying out gives exactly that slow onset.
- NEAR MISS — the noise arrived with water on the floor — Noise plus water is a drain or a pan problem first and a noise problem second, and the leak article covers it properly.

- Cabinet not level, or feet not all carrying weight — A compact refrigerator on four feet only needs one of them to be short for the whole cabinet to rock on the compressor's own vibration. On RM this is where to start, because the alternative first checks all need the cabinet moved or a panel off and this one does not.
- Evaporator fan blade catching ice inside the freezer section — A blade clipping frost gives a hard, intermittent tick that changes with the door: hold the door switch in and the sound appears, let it out and it stops. Water and a live cabinet are the combination to avoid here — dry the floor before you start, and if the fault has already put water near the plug or the cord, isolate at the breaker rather than by pulling the plug out of a wet socket.
