The answer first
On the HD group the ice complaint splits cleanly at the mould: dry means water is not arriving, full of water that never freezes means the compartment is not cold enough, and a block that never releases means the harvest side. Each of those three points at a different half of the machine. The order below follows that split rather than working through parts.
The observable symptoms
- Cubes are hollow, small or only partly formed — A short fill, which usually means restricted supply rather than no supply.
- There is no sound of a fill at any point in the day — A fill is audible; its absence over a full day means water is not being called for or not arriving.
- A knock in the pipework each time it fills — Water hammer at the fill valve, which is a plumbing symptom rather than an ice maker one.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet has no factory ice maker — Not every model under this stem is fitted with one. If there is no mould and no arm inside the freezer section, there is nothing here to repair.
Causes in likelihood order on this model group
- The cabinet is not fitted with an ice maker, or its switch is off — Across a stem this wide the fitting is not uniform, and an arm resting in its raised position or a switch left off produces exactly the same complaint as a broken machine. It leads here anyway: of the one codes under this stem the ones that carry the fitting are the ones that generate this complaint, so it is the first thing to settle.
- Water supply shut off, kinked or restricted at the valve — The supply usually starts at a small valve under a sink or behind the cabinet, and that valve is the part most often found half closed or silted up. Second here, and it is the rank most sensitive to how the cabinet is used — a unit opened all day sees this far sooner than one that is not.
- Fill tube frozen shut — If a fill overshoots or the compartment runs very cold, the tube that delivers water can ice over, and every subsequent fill adds to the blockage rather than reaching the mould. Third: common enough on refrigeration generally, but on a cabinet of this size the two above it account for most of what walks in the door.
What to check first, second, third
- Give it time between checks — An ice maker cycles slowly, so a change made now shows up in hours rather than minutes. Judging it too early is how the same check gets done three times.
- Look inside the freezer section for the mould and the arm — No mould means nothing to fix. An arm in the raised position, or a switch at off, means nothing broken.
- Follow the line back to its shutoff and open it fully — Then look along the line for a kink where the cabinet meets the wall.
- Look for ice at the back of the compartment above the mould — A visible spike of ice is the fault. Clearing it is a temporary fix; what caused the overshoot is the real question.
Safety before diagnosis
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and on a refrigerator the compressor circuit stays live for as long as the plug is in.

When to call a technician
Two conditions make this a service call rather than a Saturday job: the cause is behind a sealed panel, or the cause is the sealed system itself. Either way the tools are not owner tools and the refrigerant is not owner-serviceable.
