The short answer for MCR models
Ice production on the MCR family depends on three things arriving together — water, cold and a working harvest cycle. The diagnosis is a matter of establishing which of the three is missing, and the mould tells you that in one look. Nothing below requires a panel off until the last step.
What this looks like at the cabinet
- The ice tastes or smells of the cabinet — Old ice in a bin absorbs odour; it is a housekeeping matter rather than a fault.
- Ice or water spilling over the front of the mould — An overfill, which points at the fill valve not shutting rather than at the mould.
- One solid block instead of separate cubes — The harvest cycle is not releasing, or cubes are melting and refreezing in the bin.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet has no factory ice maker — Not every model under this stem is fitted with one. If there is no mould and no arm inside the freezer section, there is nothing here to repair.
What it usually turns out to be, in order
- The cabinet is not fitted with an ice maker, or its switch is off — Across a stem this wide the fitting is not uniform, and an arm resting in its raised position or a switch left off produces exactly the same complaint as a broken machine. It heads the list because the single model this page covers share it — nothing in the model table separates one code from another on this point.
- Freezer section not cold enough to cycle the mould — An ice maker only harvests once the mould reaches its release temperature, so a compartment running a few degrees warm makes ice slowly or stops entirely. It ranks second on MCR rather than first only because the cause above it is quicker to exclude, not because it is rarer.
- Water supply shut off, kinked or restricted at the valve — The supply usually starts at a small valve under a sink or behind the cabinet, and that valve is the part most often found half closed or silted up. Third on MCR: it is still something you can see rather than measure, but it takes the cabinet emptied or moved and the two above it do not.
Work through it in this order
- Look at the mould before anything else — Dry, wet or solid: that single observation on an MCR cabinet decides which half of the list below applies and saves working through the other half.
- Look inside the freezer section for the mould and the arm — No mould means nothing to fix. An arm in the raised position, or a switch at off, means nothing broken.
- Judge the freezer section by the food in it — Ice cream that is soft and packets that flex are a temperature answer, not an ice maker answer.
- Follow the line back to its shutoff and open it fully — Then look along the line for a kink where the cabinet meets the wall.
Safety before diagnosis
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.

When to call a technician
Call when the next step would need a meter, and call earlier than that for three things: a breaker that will not stay in, a plug or cord warm to the touch, and oil at any joint in the tubing. Everything above those lines is owner work and most of it needs no tool at all, which is why the order puts it first.
