An HD cabinet that leaks is usually leaking its own melt rather than anything from a supply. That matters because it changes the urgency: a blocked drain is a nuisance that ruins a floor slowly, while a supply leak fills a room. Establish which you have before anything else, by finding out whether the water is cold, clean and intermittent or steady and increasing.
What this looks like at the cabinet
- The water appears in a cycle, a day or two apart — That rhythm is the defrost cycle, which places the fault firmly on the drain side.
- A musty smell with damp at the base of the cabinet — Standing water in a channel that has not drained for some time.
- An old stain on the floor with no visible water now — An intermittent leak on the defrost cycle rather than a continuous one.
- NEAR MISS — water plus a new rattle from underneath — A pan that has shifted makes noise and spills at the same time, and both stop when it is seated properly.
Causes, most likely first on HD models
- Frost building where it should not, then melting — Ice that forms on the rear wall or around a vent melts when the machine cycles off, and that melt arrives somewhere the drain was never meant to serve. First on this family because it needs nothing taken apart — on a cabinet this size it is a look and a listen, and excluding it costs less than five minutes.
- Door seal letting warm damp air in — A gasket that no longer seals admits room air, and that air gives up its moisture on the first cold surface it meets. Ranked second because it explains the cases the first cause does not, and because on this family the two are checked from the same side of the cabinet.
- Drain pan cracked, displaced or overflowing — The pan sits over the compressor so its heat can evaporate what collects. Third on this family, and the rank where the cause stops being obvious from the doorway.
What to check first, second, third
- The order and why — Two of the causes above are settled from inside the cabinet and two need it pulled out. Doing the inside pair first avoids moving a full machine for nothing.
- Look for frost in places that should be clear — The rear wall, the vents and the area around the door are the three that matter.
- Test the seal with a strip of paper at four points — A strip that pulls out without resistance shows where the air is getting in, and that spot is usually where the water is worst.
- Pull the cabinet out and look at the pan — It should sit square on its bracket and be damp rather than brimming. Note whether it is cracked or merely displaced.

Isolate the machine first: unplug it, or switch off its breaker if the plug is behind the cabinet. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, so wait before touching any terminal.

Where the owner fix stops
Call once the owner-side checks above are clean and the cabinet is still wrong. Call without finishing the list if the fault is on the sealed system — if you can see oil at the compressor or at a tubing joint, or you smell burning — because oil outside the tubing means the system is open, and every hour the unit runs after that costs more to put right.
