The answer first
The HD family answers this complaint in a particular order because of how the cabinet is built: the condenser is reachable, the door seal is visible, and the evaporator is behind a panel. So the checks that cost nothing come first, and the ones that need the machine opened come last. Nothing below asks you to touch the sealed system.
The observable symptoms
- Condensation or sweating around the door frame — Warm room air is reaching the cold surface, and the seal is the usual route.
- It stopped cooling within a day or two of being moved — Clearance, level and a knocked control account for most faults that appear on that timescale.
- The machine starts, runs briefly and stops again — A short cycle with a click at each end usually means the motor is going out on its overload instead of running.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is warm and the unit is completely silent — That is a no-power or start-relay fault rather than a cooling fault, and it is a different article: check the socket, the cord and the breaker first.
What it usually turns out to be, in order
- Evaporator or condenser fan not running — Either fan stopping produces a warm cabinet: without the evaporator fan the cold stays on the coil, and without the condenser fan the heat stays in the coil. Ranked first here: it is both the commonest cause of this complaint on compact refrigeration and the cheapest to rule out, which is the same reason it belongs before anything requiring a panel.
- Thermostat, sensor or control set wrong or reading wrong — A dial knocked to its warmest position, or a sensor reading colder than the cabinet really is, both stop the machine asking for cold. It ranks second on HD rather than first only because the cause above it is quicker to exclude, not because it is rarer.
- Condenser coil choked, or no clearance around the cabinet — Heat leaves the refrigerant at the condenser, and a coil packed with dust or a cabinet pushed tight into a recess cannot do it. Third: real, but it usually announces itself with something the first two causes do not produce, so the earlier checks will have already pointed at it.
Work through it in this order
- Before the first step — Give the machine an uninterrupted hour with the door shut and then judge it, because a cabinet that has been open while you looked at it will read warm for reasons that are not the fault.
- Listen at the cabinet for each fan in turn — The condenser fan runs whenever the compressor does; the evaporator fan stops with the door switch, so hold the switch in to hear it.
- Check the setting, then watch whether the machine cycles — Set it to the middle of the range and see whether the compressor responds within a few minutes.
- Look at the condenser and at the clearance around the cabinet — Dust on the coil and a tight recess produce the same result, and both are visible without a tool.
Safety before diagnosis
Safety
Isolate first: unplug the machine, or switch off the breaker if the socket is behind the cabinet. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.

Where the owner fix stops
The line on this family is the panel: everything above it is owner work, and the moment a diagnosis needs the freezer rear panel off or a meter on a winding, it is a service call. Call immediately if the breaker trips again after a reset, if the cord or plug is warm to the touch, or if you see oil anywhere on the tubing.
