The short answer for AV models
Most noise complaints on an Avanti AV refrigerator resolve to frost touching a fan blade. The defrost cycle falls behind, ice creeps onto the evaporator shroud, and the blade clips it once per revolution — a ticking or warbling that gets louder as the ice grows.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- A sharp crack from the walls in the first hour after installation — Plastic liners taking up temperature. It settles and is not a fault.
- A warbling or fluttering that rises and falls — Frost has grown onto the fan shroud and the blade is clipping it once per turn.
- A hard knocking a few seconds after the unit starts — The compressor is rocking on its mounts and tapping the shell or a nearby line.
- A rattle that stops when you lean on the cabinet — A loose drip tray, a levelling foot off the floor, or a panel screw that has backed out.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is also warming up — Noise plus lost cooling is one fault, not two, and the cooling page is where it is diagnosed.
What actually fails on these models, in order
- Evaporator fan blade catching frost — Ranked first because the defrost system stalls long before it fails outright: ice builds on the shroud over weeks, the blade clips it once per revolution, and the owner hears the tick well before anything stops cooling.
- Loose tubing touching the cabinet — A suction line that has drifted against the shell transmits every vibration the compressor makes straight into the kitchen.
- Ice maker fill valve buzzing — A valve that buzzes without water arriving is being asked to open against a closed supply, and it will burn out if that is left.
- Cabinet not level or a foot off the floor — The cheapest cause on the list and worth ruling out first because it takes a minute: an unloaded foot lets the whole cabinet drum.
The order that saves the most time
- Start with what the ranking makes most likely — Work down this list rather than starting where the fault seems loudest.
- Look at the freezer rear panel for frost at the vents — Frost creeping out of the vent slots means ice has reached the shroud, which is the commonest noise cause on this class.
- Rock the cabinet gently front to back — Movement means a foot is off the floor, and an unloaded foot turns the cabinet into a drum.
- Shut the water supply to the ice maker for one day — If the twice-daily buzz disappears, the fill valve is what you were hearing.
Before you take any panel off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the compressor circuit on a refrigerator is live whenever the plug is in. Leave the door switch wired exactly as it is: it cuts power to the evaporator fan for a reason, and defeating it puts a moving blade behind a panel you are reaching past.
