The short answer for AV models
A leaking AV refrigerator sorts by WHERE the water appears. Inside, under the drawers, means the defrost drain. On the floor at the front means the drain pan or the door seal.
What it looks like from the outside
- Ice building up behind the rear freezer panel — A drain that has frozen rather than silted, and it will keep refreezing until it is cleared.
- A musty smell from the fresh-food compartment — Standing water in the drain channel that never gets away.
- Damp or lifted flooring in front of the unit — A slow leak that has been going far longer than the owner realises.
- Water dripping from the dispenser after each use — A few drops are normal. A steady drip is a dispenser valve not seating.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is also warm — Then cooling is the fault; the water is a symptom of the ice that follows a stalled defrost.
Causes on AV, most likely first
- Defrost drain tube blocked with debris — Ranked first because every unit of this type makes defrost melt and this is the only path it has.
- Drain pan cracked or dislodged — The pan sits over the compressor and is knocked out of place whenever the unit is moved, which is when most owners notice.
- Cabinet out of level — A unit tipped forward runs its condensate the wrong way along the channel and out at the front.
- Defrost drain frozen — Second and closely related: once a slow drain holds water through a cold cycle it freezes solid and then blocks every cycle after it.
Working through it in order
- Where to begin — This order exists because the cheap causes are also the likely ones: four of the four named above can be settled on AV models before a tool comes out.
- Watch the dispenser for a minute after use — More than a few drops means the dispenser valve is not seating.
- Pull the unit out and look at the drain pan — It should sit square over the compressor and be damp rather than full.
- Check the cabinet is level front to back — A unit tipped forward sends condensate the wrong way along its own channel.
What to isolate before you start
Safety
Pull the plug or switch the breaker off before any panel is disturbed, and remember that a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut the water supply as well if the refrigerator has an ice maker or a dispenser, because that connection is at mains pressure and it is behind the cabinet where you will be working. Leave interlocks alone and leave the sealed system to a licensed technician.

When to call a technician
Call a technician when the checks above have not changed anything, when the fault needs a meter on live terminals, or when the answer turns out to be the sealed system. Call the same day rather than waiting if there is a burning smell, if the cabinet or the plug is hot, or if the unit has tripped a breaker — those are electrical faults rather than cooling ones and they do not improve with time.
