The short answer for AV models
An ice maker on an Avanti AV refrigerator that has stopped is usually a supply problem rather than a broken ice maker: a closed or kinked supply line, a clogged filter, or a fill valve that is no longer opening. The ice maker itself is the last thing to suspect and the first thing most owners blame.
What the owner sees
- Water on the freezer floor under the ice maker — Overfill or a misaligned fill tube, and it will freeze into a sheet if left.
- A buzz twice a day with no water arriving — The fill valve is being asked to open against a closed or blocked supply.
- The ice tastes or smells of the freezer — Old ice that has been sitting through many cycles, which is itself a sign production has slowed.
- The cubes have fused into one solid lump — Slow production, so each cube part-melts and refreezes onto the next.
- NEAR MISS — the whole cabinet is warm — Then this is a cooling failure and the ice is only the first symptom you noticed.
Causes on AV, most likely first
- Bail arm or shut-off sensor in the off position — Ranked first because it costs nothing to check and because a bin being pulled in and out is exactly what knocks it up.
- Fill tube frozen — A partial fill that dribbles rather than shoots freezes in the tube and then blocks every fill after it.
- Water filter at the end of its life — Second: flow falls off gradually, so the owner sees smaller cubes for weeks before production stops entirely.
- Ejector or motor jammed — A cube that has bridged the mould will stall the ejector, and the module stops until it is cleared.
Working through it in order
- The order, and why it is this one — On AV models, three of the four causes above are checkable without a panel coming off, and this order puts every one of them before anything that is not.
- Check whether the mould is wet or dry — Dry means no water is arriving; wet means water arrives and the harvest is what has stopped.
- Pull the unit out and follow the supply line for a kink — Look particularly where the line passes behind the cabinet, which is where it gets pinched.
- Listen for the fill valve buzz twice a day — A buzz with no water is a valve opening against nothing, which points upstream.
What to isolate before you start
Safety
Pull the plug or switch the breaker off before any panel is disturbed, and remember that a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut the water supply as well if the refrigerator has an ice maker or a dispenser, because that connection is at mains pressure and it is behind the cabinet where you will be working. Leave interlocks alone and leave the sealed system to a licensed technician.

When to call a technician
Call once the owner-side checks above are clean, and call immediately if the fault turns out to be on the sealed system: refrigerant work is licensed work and the tools for it are not owner tools. Call without finishing the list if you see oil at the compressor or smell burning, because oil outside the tubing means the system is open and every hour it runs after that costs more to put right.
