The short answer for AV models
An Avanti AV refrigerator that hums away without cooling is not usually beyond help. A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below, so move anything perishable to a cooler now, then work down the checks below in order rather than opening the doors repeatedly to see whether it has improved.
What it looks like from the outside
- The back of the cabinet is hot to the touch — A condenser that cannot shed heat, usually because it is under a blanket of dust.
- Warm air blowing from the fresh-food vents — The fan is running and what it is moving is not cold.
- A sheet of frost on the freezer rear wall — Not the usual light dusting but a solid layer over the vents.
- Food in the fresh-food drawers spoiling early — The drawers sit furthest from the vents and warm first.
- NEAR MISS — the unit is completely silent — No hum at all is a power, start-relay or control fault and not this page.

Switch the breaker off or pull the plug before anything comes apart. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. On a refrigerator the heavy items are the doors and the cabinet itself, so get help before moving it rather than after, and never lay it on its side to reach underneath.

When to call a technician
