The short answer
Most SGD dryer noise is something loose, something worn in the drum support, or the cabinet itself rather than the motor. One cabinet carries both machines, and the burner adds one sound that is never acceptable. Whether the noise follows the drum or the motor is the single most useful observation on this page. There is one number under the SGD label in the table below, so nothing here depends on which variant you own.
What you observe on these models
- Noise that changes when the washer is running below — One cabinet, two machines.
- A metallic rattle that comes and goes — Something loose in the blower, which is past the filter and needs the cabinet open.
- A scrape exactly once per revolution — Something caught between the drum and the seal.
- The noise is worse with a load than without — Drum supports under weight.
- NEAR MISS — a squeal from the motor with the drum stationary — That is a belt or motor fault and needs the machine stopped now.
Causes, most likely first on the SGD family
- The cabinet, its levelling and the washer below — First, for the same reason as any laundry centre: both machines share one frame.
- Items in the drum — Second: coins, buttons and zip pulls make a noise that sounds expensive and costs nothing to find.
- Drum rollers and glides — Third: a rhythmic rumble that follows the drum rather than the motor, and it is always worse with a load in than without.
- Blower wheel and belt — Fourth: debris past the filter rattles in the blower housing, and a worn idler squeals as it takes up the belt. Both are audible before either fails.
- Motor bearings, and any noise at the burner — Last: a roar or a rushing sound from the burner area is not a noise complaint to work through at home; isolate the machine and call.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Level the cabinet and check the brackets — Same argument as any laundry centre.
- Run the washer alone and listen — It clears or convicts the lower machine.
- Check the machine is level and the cabinet brackets are tight — On a laundry centre this comes first, because one cabinet carries both machines.
- Run the washer empty and see whether the noise appears then too — If it does, the dryer is not the machine at fault.
- Separate squeal from rumble and note whether it follows drum or motor — It decides who needs to come out and with what.

If you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel.

When to call a technician
Loose items, a level cabinet, tight brackets and a clear blower are yours on a stacked gas laundry centre dryer. On these models the line falls at the heating circuit and the protection devices in it. Call without working through anything at all for a motor that hums without turning, which should be switched off rather than retried.
