The short answer
Most SED dryer noise is something loose, something worn in the drum support, or the cabinet itself rather than the motor. One cabinet carries both machines here, so the washer below is a genuine suspect. Whether the noise follows the drum or the motor is the single most useful observation on this page. What you observe on these models
- The noise is worse when the washer has just finished — The cabinet is shared and so is the vibration.
- A hum with no drum movement — Stop.
- A rumble that follows the drum rather than the motor — Rollers and glides.
- The noise started suddenly rather than growing — Sudden means something loose or something arriving in the blower; gradual means wear.
- NEAR MISS — a squeal from the motor with the drum stationary — That is a belt or motor fault and needs the machine stopped now.
Causes, most likely first on the SED family
- The cabinet itself, and the washer underneath it — First on a laundry centre and specific to it: one cabinet holds both machines, so an unbalanced washer, an unlevel foot or a bracket that has worked loose turns every dryer rotation into a noise complaint.
- Items in the drum — Second: coins, buttons and zip pulls make a noise that sounds expensive and costs nothing to find.
- The floor under the machine — Third: a suspended timber floor amplifies what a concrete one absorbs, which is why the same machine is loud in one room and quiet in another.
- Drum rollers and glides — Fourth: rhythmic rumble tracking the drum.
- Blower wheel and belt — Last: debris rattles; a worn idler squeals.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Check the machine is level and the cabinet brackets are tight — On a laundry centre this comes first, because one cabinet carries both machines.
- Run the washer empty and see whether the noise appears then too — If it does, the dryer is not the machine at fault.
- Check the drum and every pocket for coins and buttons — The cheapest test on the page and a real share of the calls.
- Put a level on the top and make all four feet carry weight — A machine on three feet knocks on every rotation.
- Feel round the front seal for something caught — A wire or a pen scrapes once per revolution and marks the drum if it is left.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Isolating at the breaker is better than pulling the plug where the socket is behind the appliance, because it removes the temptation to work one-handed.
