The short answer for DWF models
An Avanti DWF dishwasher that has stopped cleaning well is usually being starved of water, heat or spray coverage rather than suffering a failed component. A blocked spray arm, a filter nobody has cleaned, or dishes loaded so that they shadow each other account for most of what we are called out to on this line.
What it looks like from the outside
- Grit and fragments redeposited on the upper rack — A filter that has stopped filtering, so the same debris circulates all cycle.
- Only the top rack cleans properly — The upper spray arm is fed, the lower is blocked, or something is stopping the lower arm turning.
- Dishes still wet as well as dirty — A heat fault, which links poor cleaning and poor drying to one cause.
- Food debris still stuck to plates after a full cycle — The wash is not reaching them, or it is redepositing what it removed.
- NEAR MISS — the cycle never starts at all — A machine that will not start is a different page and a different list.
Causes on DWF, most likely first
- Filter silted with food waste — Ranked first because the filter is the one part this machine asks the owner to clean and the one part almost nobody does.
- Rinse aid empty or set too low — The commonest cause of film and spotting once the wash itself is fine.
- Detergent old, damp or wrong for the machine — Tablets that have absorbed moisture in the cupboard perform far below a fresh one.
- Drain not clearing between fills — Dirty water carried into the next fill means the machine starts the rinse already soiled.
The order that saves the most time
- The order, and why it is this one — This order exists because the cheap causes are also the likely ones: three of the four named above can be settled on DWF models before a tool comes out.
- Check whether the detergent actually dissolved — Residue in the dispenser separates a chemistry problem from a mechanical one.
- Compare the top and bottom racks after one cycle — Which rack fails points straight at which spray arm or feed is at fault.
- Spin both spray arms by hand through a full turn — Anything that stops them, or a jet you can see is blocked, is directly costing you coverage.
- Check the rinse aid reservoir — An empty reservoir explains film and spotting without anything being wrong with the wash.
- Look for standing water in the bottom before a cycle — Water left from last time means the machine starts dirty every run.
Two isolations and one wait
Safety
Pull the plug or switch the breaker off, close the supply valve, and then wait for the machine to cool. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the sump element of a dishwasher stays hot long after the cycle ends. Wear a glove when clearing the sump: glass fragments end up there and cannot be seen in water.

When to call a technician
Call when the filter, the sump, the hose and the household waste are all proved clear and the machine still will not drain, or when the fault needs the sump cover or the pump disturbed. That is the point where water and live terminals share a space and it stops being owner work.
