The short answer for DWF models
On the DWF line the leaks worth separating are the ones that only happen during a cycle and the ones that happen at rest. A leak at rest is a supply connection or a fill valve, and it needs the tap closed now.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- Water at the back of the machine only — A supply connection, the fill valve or the drain hose joint.
- Damp or swollen cabinet plinth and flooring — A slow leak that has been running for a long time before anyone saw water.
- Water around the door hinges at the lower corners — The point the door seal fails first on most designs.
- A puddle at the front of the plinth — Water that has travelled along the base tray from wherever it started.
- NEAR MISS — standing water inside the machine, dry floor — That is a drainage fault and it is a different page.
Causes on DWF, most likely first
- Door seal perished or displaced — Ranked first because the door is the only part of a dishwasher that opens, and its seal takes a set from thousands of cycles of heat.
- Sump seal or heater seal leaking — Behind the base panel, and where this stops being an owner repair.
- Debris on the door seal face — Second and free to fix: a fragment of food or a cocktail stick on the sealing face holds the seal open.
- Machine not level, so the door does not sit square — A twisted cabinet holds one corner of the seal open permanently.
Check in this order, and why
- Where to begin — Work down this list rather than starting where the fault seems loudest.
- Pull the machine out and look at both hose connections — Supply at the top, drain at the waste.
- Look under the plinth with a torch for the trail — Water travels along the base tray, so where it shows is rarely where it starts.
- Run a finger round the whole door seal for debris and hard spots — Both hold the seal open and both are free to fix.
- Check the machine is level and the door closes square — A twisted cabinet holds one corner of the seal off its face permanently.
- Close the supply valve and see whether the leak stops — A leak that continues with the water off is stored water; a leak that stops is mains-fed and urgent.
Water and electricity in the same cabinet
Safety
Switch off the breaker or pull the plug, and close the supply valve, before any panel comes off a dishwasher. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and this appliance puts live terminals and pressurised water within a hand of each other under the tub. The heating element in the sump stays hot well after a cycle ends, so give it time before you reach in.

When to call a technician
Call once the free checks are done and the fault stands: filter cleaned, spray arms cleared, hose proved, waste proved. Call immediately rather than finishing the list if the machine has tripped a breaker, if there is water reaching a socket, or if the leak is continuous with the machine switched off, because that last one is fed at mains pressure.
