The short answer for DWF models
On the DWF line a drainage fault has a clear order to it. Clear the filter and the sump first because they are free, then the hose and the household connection, and only then treat the pump as a suspect.
What you actually observe
- The problem appeared right after a new waste disposer was fitted — The knockout plug, almost every time.
- A cycle that stops partway and shows a fault — Many machines abort when they cannot verify the water has gone.
- Silence at the drain step — The pump is not being driven at all, which moves the fault to the electrical side.
- Standing water in the bottom at the end of the cycle — The defining symptom, and how much is left tells you whether it drained slowly or not at all.
- NEAR MISS — the dishes are dirty but the machine drains — That is a cleaning fault and belongs on that page.
Causes on DWF, most likely first
- Filter and sump packed with food waste — Ranked first because it is the commonest and the only one the owner is asked to maintain.
- Check valve stuck — Holds water in the machine or lets it back in, depending on which way it sticks.
- Waste disposer knockout plug still in place — Second and the reason a machine that drained yesterday does not today: fitting a disposer without removing the plug seals the drain completely.
- No high loop in the drain hose — Without the loop, sink water siphons back into the machine, which reads as a drain that never worked.
Working through it in order
- The order, and why it is this one — Work down this list rather than starting where the fault seems loudest.
- Pull the machine out and follow the drain hose for kinks — It gets pinched against the wall or a cabinet foot whenever anything is moved.
- Listen at the drain step and decide between a hum and silence — A hum is a blocked pump; silence is a pump not being driven.
- Ask whether a waste disposer was fitted recently — If yes, check the knockout plug before anything else on this list.
- Check the hose rises to a high loop under the worktop — Without it, sink water siphons straight back into the machine.

Safety
Switch off the breaker or pull the plug, and close the supply valve, before any panel comes off a dishwasher. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and this appliance puts live terminals and pressurised water within a hand of each other under the tub. The heating element in the sump stays hot well after a cycle ends, so give it time before you reach in.

When to call a technician
Call when the filter, the sump, the hose and the household waste are all proved clear and the machine still will not drain, or when the fault needs the sump cover or the pump disturbed. That is the point where water and live terminals share a space and it stops being owner work.
