The short answer for DW models
Poor cleaning on an Avanti DW dishwasher divides cleanly. Food left on the dishes means the wash is not reaching them; a white film on otherwise clean dishes means water chemistry and rinse aid; and grit redeposited everywhere means the filter.
What it looks like from the outside
- Only the top rack cleans properly — The upper spray arm is fed, the lower is blocked, or something is stopping the lower arm turning.
- Grit and fragments redeposited on the upper rack — A filter that has stopped filtering, so the same debris circulates all cycle.
- A smell from the machine between cycles — Standing food waste, which is the same accumulation that stops it cleaning.
- Only the bottom rack cleans properly — The feed to the upper arm is blocked, often by a tall item sitting in its path.
- A white chalky film on glasses and cutlery — Water hardness and rinse aid rather than a mechanical fault.
- NEAR MISS — water is left standing in the bottom — That is a drainage fault and it belongs on the drainage page for this dishwasher.
Likely causes on DW, ordered
- Filter silted with food waste — Ranked first because the filter is the one part this machine asks the owner to clean and the one part almost nobody does.
- Loading that shadows the spray — Large flat items laid across the bottom rack shield everything behind them, and it is free to correct.
- Dispenser flap blocked by a tall item — The flap opens into the cabinet and a plate in the way keeps it shut for the whole cycle.
- Spray arm not turning freely — A tall item catching the upper arm, or a bearing stiff with lime, stops coverage entirely on that level.

- Pull the filter out and look at it before running anything — If it is packed, you have found a cause and should clean it before any other test is meaningful.
- Check whether the detergent actually dissolved — Residue in the dispenser separates a chemistry problem from a mechanical one.
- Compare the top and bottom racks after one cycle — Which rack fails points straight at which spray arm or feed is at fault.

Switch off the breaker or pull the plug, and close the supply valve, before any panel comes off a dishwasher. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and this appliance puts live terminals and pressurised water within a hand of each other under the tub. The heating element in the sump stays hot well after a cycle ends, so give it time before you reach in.
