The short answer for DWF models
When an Avanti DWF dishwasher refuses to start, the first question is whether it has power at all. A dead panel is a supply problem; a lit panel that will not respond to the start button is a latch, a lock or a cycle already in progress.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- It stops immediately after starting — It began and aborted, which is a different fault from never starting.
- The panel is completely dead — No power reaching the machine, or its own supply has failed.
- The cycle light comes on but no water enters — It has started and is waiting for a fill that is not happening.
- The control lock indicator is lit — The machine is behaving exactly as designed and ignoring every press.
- NEAR MISS — it starts and then stops with water in the bottom — That is a drain fault and belongs on the drainage page.
What actually fails on these models, in order
- Door not latching fully — Ranked first because the latch operates a switch that gates everything else, and a rack pushed proud is enough to stop it making.
- Door spring or hinge worn — The door no longer closes square, so the latch no longer aligns with its keeper.
- Control lock or child lock engaged — Second because it is so easily set by accident and because the machine then ignores every press exactly as designed.
- Power not reaching the machine — A tripped breaker, a switched spur off, or a socket behind a cabinet that has worked loose.
Check in this order, and why
- The order, and why it is this one — This order exists because the cheap causes are also the likely ones: three of the four named above can be settled on DWF models before a tool comes out.
- Check the racks are pushed fully in — A rack proud by a few millimetres holds the door off its latch and is invisible with the door shut.
- Test the socket with something else, or check the breaker — If the circuit is dead the machine is not the fault yet.
- Look at the panel before pressing anything — Dead, lit, locked or counting down are four different faults and the panel tells you which for free.
Two isolations and one wait
Safety
Pull the plug or switch the breaker off, close the supply valve, and then wait for the machine to cool. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the sump element of a dishwasher stays hot long after the cycle ends. Wear a glove when clearing the sump: glass fragments end up there and cannot be seen in water.

When to call a technician
Call once the free checks are done and the fault stands: filter cleaned, spray arms cleared, hose proved, waste proved. Call immediately rather than finishing the list if the machine has tripped a breaker, if there is water reaching a socket, or if the leak is continuous with the machine switched off, because that last one is fed at mains pressure.
