What you actually see
- The cabinet cools better when it is nearly empty — A machine that can just manage a light load and not a full one is short of capacity rather than broken.
- Sweating on the door frame or on the outside of the cabinet — Warm moist air is getting in past a seal, and the machine is fighting it every minute of the day.
- Food at the front is cold while food at the back is frozen — Uneven, not warm, which is a distribution problem and usually a damper or a loaded vent.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is silent, dark and completely dead — That is a power or control fault and it is a different page. Nothing below will help you.
Causes, most likely first on the ABR series
- Blocked internal vents or an overloaded cabinet — Packages pressed against the return and supply vents stop the circuit the designer intended. It is common after a big shop and it is free to fix.
- A door gasket that has stopped sealing — A gasket that has taken a set, or a door that no longer closes square on its hinges, leaks warm wet air in continuously. The tell is frost or sweat that always forms at the same corner.
- An ambient temperature the cabinet was never built for — A cabinet in a garage, a porch or an unventilated cupboard is working outside what its thermostat can manage. In summer it cannot lose heat; in winter it may barely run at all.
- A start relay or overload that will not bring the compressor up — If the compressor is not actually running, nothing downstream matters. A relay that clicks and drops out leaves a cabinet that is silent between clicks and never gets cold.
The order to work in
- Feel the coil or the grille area at the back or under the kick panel — Warm means heat is being rejected. Cool on a cabinet that has been running for hours means it is not.
- Put a thermometer in a glass of water in the middle shelf overnight — Cabinet air temperature swings every time the door opens; water does not, so it tells you what the food is actually seeing.
- Only then consider the control and the sealed system — They are last because they are the two that cost money to be wrong about.

Treat the machine as live until it is unplugged or its breaker is off, and treat it as charged even then — a capacitor holds its charge after the power is off. A loaded cabinet is heavy and top-heavy with the doors open, so get help to move it rather than walking it on its corners. Work with the machine cold, dry and isolated, and stop at the first step that would need it powered.
