Avallon ADDR Series Refrigerator is the scope of this page, and on it a cabinet that runs and will not get cold points first at a stalled defrost cycle icing the evaporator over. What you observe
- Sweating on the door frame or on the outside of the cabinet — Warm moist air is getting in past a seal, and the machine is fighting it every minute of the day.
- It recovers overnight and loses it again by the afternoon — A cabinet that only fails when the room is warm is telling you about its clearance and its coil.
- The back of the cabinet is very hot to the touch — Heat is being made and not carried away, which is a clearance and coil question before it is anything else.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is cold but the ice maker is empty — Cooling is fine; the problem is in the ice circuit, which is covered on its own page.
Causes, most likely first on the ADDR series
- A stalled defrost cycle icing the evaporator over — Defrost failures do not announce themselves. The heater or its sensor gives up, frost accumulates until it bridges the fins, and from then on you have a cold block of ice with no air moving over it.
- Blocked internal vents or an overloaded cabinet — Air has to go somewhere. Stack the shelves to the roof, or push a box against the back wall, and the cold sits in one place while the rest of the box drifts up.
- A failed or obstructed evaporator fan — A fan bearing that has dried out, or a blade fouled by ice, stops circulation dead. The giveaway is a cabinet that is cold right at the back panel and warm everywhere else.
- A start relay or overload that will not bring the compressor up — A compressor that tries, clicks off, and tries again a few minutes later is being cut out by its overload. That is a starting-circuit fault, not a cooling fault, and it needs a technician.
Check in this order, and why
- Feel the coil or the grille area at the back or under the kick panel — Warm means heat is being rejected. Cool on a cabinet that has been running for hours means it is not.
- Compare the two compartments against each other — Both warm points one way, one warm points another, and knowing which halves the list before a tool comes out.
- Empty the cabinet down to a few items and watch it for a day — Capacity faults and airflow faults behave completely differently under a light load, and this is how to tell them apart for free.
- Only then consider the control and the sealed system — They are last because they are the two that cost money to be wrong about.

Before a panel comes off, the machine comes off the supply: unplug it or switch its breaker off. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off a compartment wall with anything metal. The evaporator is close behind that surface and a pierced one ends the cabinet. Put back every panel, clip and cover you take off before the machine goes back on the supply.

When to call a technician
Draw the line this way: what you can see, reach and clear with the machine isolated is owner work; the sealed system, the compressor and anything that has to be measured rather than looked at is not.
