The short answer
On the ABR series of Avallon refrigerators, water turning up where it should not leads first to the ice maker fill tube or its seal. All 4 of the causes below can at least be narrowed down without a tool, which is unusual and worth taking advantage of.
What you actually see
- A lens of ice across the bottom of the freezer — Meltwater that never left, froze where it stood and built up layer by layer.
- Water running down the inside of the back wall — The drain behind the panel is blocked and the meltwater is finding another way out.
- A wet patch that appears only after a defrost — Timed, and that timing is the single most useful clue on this list.
- Water started after the cabinet was pushed back into place — A pan knocked askew or a line pinched behind the cabinet are both consequences of that one action.
- NEAR MISS — water arriving fast, cold and clean — That is the supply line, not meltwater. Shut the water off at the valve first, then read on.
Causes, most likely first on the ABR series
- The ice maker fill tube or its seal — A fill that misses the mould puts a small amount of water into the freezer every cycle, which arrives as a sheet of ice under the bin rather than as a puddle.
- A blocked defrost drain — Every frost-free cabinet melts its coil several times a day and has to send that water somewhere. Block the drain with debris or a plug of ice and the water backs up over the freezer floor and out of the door.
- The water supply line, its fitting or the inlet valve — A supply leak is clean, cold and fast, and it does not wait for a defrost cycle. The compression fitting at the back is the usual point.
- Humid loading and open-door habits — Hot food put straight in, or a door held open while a meal is planned, puts a lot of water into a cold box, and it has to go somewhere.
The order to work in
- Decide first whether the water is clean and cold or is meltwater — A supply leak needs the water shut off immediately. Meltwater can wait until you have read the rest of the list.
- Look for the timing: constant, daily, or only after a defrost — Timed water is the drain. Constant water is the supply. That one distinction sorts most of this list.
- Switch the ice maker off for a couple of days if there is one — It is the cheapest way to eliminate a fill-side leak without taking anything apart.

Isolate the machine first. Unplug it or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, because a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A loaded cabinet is heavy and top-heavy with the doors open, so get help to move it rather than walking it on its corners. Leave every interlock and door switch exactly as you find it: each one cuts power to something for a reason.
