Asko W Series Washer is the scope of this page, and on it a machine that will not begin points first at power or water that is not arriving. What the machine is doing
- It fills briefly and stops — The machine started and abandoned the cycle, which is a different fault from one that never starts.
- Completely dead: no panel, no lights, no response — A supply question before it is a machine question.
- The door or lid will not lock, and the cycle waits — No washer starts with its door reading open, so the lock is the gate.
- It hums but the drum does not move — Power is reaching the motor and something is preventing rotation.
- NEAR MISS — it starts and stops mid-cycle — That is a cycle fault and it has its own page.
Causes, most likely first on the W series
- Power or water that is not arriving — Many machines check for water before they commit to a cycle, so a closed tap presents as a machine that will not start at all.
- A door or lid lock that will not engage — A washer will not run with the door reading open, and the lock is an electromechanical part that wears. It is first because it is both the most common and the easiest to confirm.
- A lid switch or its actuator — The actuator on the lid can break off entirely, which leaves a perfectly good switch that nothing ever operates.
- A control board or a start button that has failed — A panel that lights and responds to everything except start points at the button or at the control behind it.
- Water left in the drum from a previous cycle — If there is water in the drum, go to the drainage page first, because nothing here will start until that water leaves.
- The motor or its drive — A hum with no rotation, with the drum free by hand, is the remaining answer once everything else is clear.
What to check first, second, third
- Push the door firmly shut and try again — It tests the lock and the catch together and costs nothing.
- Decide whether the panel has life — Dead and live lead down two entirely different lists.
- Look for water still standing in the drum — A machine that cannot drain will not start, and that is a drainage fault wearing a starting fault as a disguise.
- Check both taps are open and the hoses are not kinked — Machines that check for fill before committing present a closed tap as a refusal to start.
- Only then think about the control, the switch and the motor — All three are behind panels and need a meter.

Isolate the machine first. Unplug it or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, because a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut both taps before undoing any hose. A supply hose under pressure empties a great deal of water very quickly. If a step needs a meter on live terminals, that is the end of owner work and the start of a service call.

When to call a technician
Treat the boundary this way: what you can see, reach and clear with the machine isolated is owner work; any test on a live terminal, and any repair that needs the drum out is not. On this page that puts a control board or a start button that has failed on the far side of the line. Call sooner rather than later if the fault is getting worse week by week, because the cheap version of most of these becomes the expensive version if it is left.
