Asko W Series Washer is the scope of this page, and on it water that will not leave the machine points first at a kinked, blocked or badly routed drain hose. What the machine is doing
- It stops before the spin, every time — A machine will not spin against a full tub, so a drain fault presents as a spin fault.
- Water standing in the drum at the end of the cycle — The plainest version of this fault, and it stops everything downstream of it.
- The pump runs and nothing leaves — A pump that is working against a blockage sounds busy and achieves nothing.
- It drains slowly and finishes eventually — Partial restriction, which is the same fault earlier in its life.
- A smell from the drum between washes — Standing water and trapped debris, which is the drain path telling you it is partly blocked.
- NEAR MISS — water on the floor rather than in the drum — That is a leak, and it has its own page.
Causes, most likely first on the W series
- A kinked, blocked or badly routed drain hose — Height matters too: too low and it siphons, too high and the pump cannot lift the water at all.
- A blocked pump filter — Coins, hair grips, buttons and lint collect in the filter by design, because the alternative is that they collect in the pump. It is the first thing to check and on most machines it is owner work.
- A failed or jammed drain pump — It sits behind the filter, so clearing the filter is both the cheap fix and the way to reach the pump to inspect it.
- A blocked standpipe or house drain — If the machine is pumping into a drain that is itself blocked, the water has nowhere to go and comes back. It often shows up with a sink or a trap backing up at the same time.
- Level sensing that thinks the tub is empty or full — It is inexpensive but behind a panel, which is why it sits below the checks an owner can do.
- A control that is not calling for the pump — Last and least common. If the pump has power at the right time and does nothing, that is the pump; if it never has power, the control is the candidate.
What to check first, second, third
- Pull the machine forward and look at the drain hose — Crushing behind the machine and the depth of the hose in the standpipe both show themselves in a moment.
- Listen for the pump at the point the cycle should drain — A pump that runs and moves nothing and a pump that never runs are two very different faults.
- Try a drain or spin-only cycle — It isolates the drain from the rest of the programme so you can watch it on its own.
- Only then suspect the pump itself and the sensing — Both are behind panels, and both are commonly replaced for a fault that was in the filter.
Before you open anything
Safety
Nothing below happens on a live machine. Unplug it or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off, and remember a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water and electricity share this cabinet. Nothing gets tested live, and the machine comes off the supply before any panel is opened. Work with the machine cold, dry and isolated, and stop at the first step that would need it powered.
