Asko W Series Washer is the scope of this page, and on it a new noise or vibration points first at an unbalanced or roped load. The brand page puts transit bolts left in, or feet not adjusted first; here it moves down, because what sits behind which panel on these models changes what is worth checking first. 3 of the 6 causes below can be checked without a tool; the rest need a technician.
What the machine is doing
- A grinding or scraping during the wash — Slow-speed noise points at something between the drum and the tub rather than at a bearing.
- A roar or rumble that is worst during spin — Spin is where speed is highest, so bearing noise is loudest there.
- The machine walks across the floor on spin — Levelling, feet or transit bolts, and it is free to correct.
- A banging that comes and goes each spin — An unbalanced load, which the machine will try to correct and then give up on.
- A clicking or tinkling as the drum turns — A small object between drum and tub, and it should come out before it does damage.
- NEAR MISS — noise together with water on the floor — Deal with the leak first; it is the fault with the shorter fuse.
Causes, most likely first on the W series
- An unbalanced or roped load — It presents as noise and as a cycle that runs far too long, and it is fixed by opening the door and shaking the load out.
- Transit bolts left in, or feet not adjusted — A machine that has been moved and not set up walks and bangs. The bolts hold the tub rigid and the feet decide whether it stands square.
- A coin or a wire between drum and tub — Left there they can damage the drum or block the drain, so this one is worth finding even when the noise is tolerable.
- Worn drum bearings — A rumble that rises with spin speed and is quiet during the wash is the bearing signature. It gets worse gradually over months.
- Tired shock absorbers or suspension — The pattern is distinctive: noise during the acceleration, quiet at full speed, noise again on the way down.
- A pump with debris in it — A grinding or buzzing that happens only when the machine drains is the pump, and the filter in front of it is where the debris should have stopped.
What to check first, second, third
- Run a spin-only cycle with one towel — A load that cannot unbalance separates the machine from the washing.
- Rock the machine at each corner — Any movement means the feet, and the feet are free to adjust.
- Note whether the noise tracks drum speed or only happens on drain — Speed-tracking is bearings and suspension. Drain-only is the pump.
- Reach between the drum and the seal for objects — Free, quick, and it finds the tinkling that becomes expensive if it is left.
- Only then consider bearings and suspension — They are the dear answers, and everything above imitates them at a fraction of the cost.
Before you open anything
Safety
Nothing below happens on a live machine. Unplug it or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off, and remember a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut both taps before undoing any hose. A supply hose under pressure empties a great deal of water very quickly. Work with the machine cold, dry and isolated, and stop at the first step that would need it powered.

When to call a technician
Where to stop: what you can see, reach and clear with the machine isolated is owner work; any test on a live terminal, and any repair that needs the drum out is not. On this page that puts worn drum bearings on the far side of the line. Call immediately if the machine has to be held, propped or forced to work at all, because a workaround on a fault like that has a short life.
