The short answer
On a Whirlpool washer, E2 means the water did not leave when the control told it to. The machine was still trying to drain long after the water should have gone, so it stopped and reported the drain rather than moving on to the spin.
Error codes
Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| E2 | An E2 Error code indicates that the washer is still draining after 8 minutes. Check the following: |
What you see and hear
- Water is left standing in the drum at the end of the cycle — The clothes are wet through rather than damp, and the drum has not spun.
- The pump is audible but nothing moves — A pump running against a blockage makes a higher, harder note than one that is moving water.
- NEAR MISS — the machine drains but never spins — If the water goes and the drum still will not spin, the fault is on the motor or the balance side rather than the drain, and that is a different page.
Causes, most likely first
- The pump filter or the pump inlet is blocked — Ranked first because it is the most common answer by a wide margin and because it is the one an owner can clear.
- The pump impeller is jammed or the pump has failed — Something hard that gets past the filter can stall the impeller, and a pump motor that has run against a blockage for weeks often fails soon after the blockage is cleared.
- The sensing or control side has failed — Last: the control decides the drain failed by what its level sensor tells it, so a sensing fault can post a drain code with a perfectly good pump.
Check in this order, and why
- Empty the pump filter first — It is the highest-yield check on this code and it needs no tools beyond a shallow pan.
- Listen at the pump while the control calls for drain — Straining means a restriction, silence means the pump is not being driven or has failed, and a normal note with no water moving means the blockage is downstream.
- Check the pump circuit and the level sensing at the control — Needed only once the filter, the hose and the impeller are clear. Panel off, meter, machine live — a technician's step.
What an owner can safely do
- Switch off at the breaker and drain the machine through the pump filter — Lay towels, open the access flap at the base, and let it drain into a shallow pan in stages — there is more water in the drum than the pan holds.
Tools: shallow pan, towelsAbout 30 min
- Clear the filter housing and check the impeller — With the filter out, reach in and turn the impeller by hand. It should spin freely; grit and hair wrapped around the shaft come out at this point.
Tools: torch, glovesAbout 20 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on live terminals or a panel off — That is the line between an owner check and a service call on this circuit.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the washer or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off, and close both taps at the wall. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Drain the drum through the pump filter into a shallow pan before you tip or move the machine, and never defeat the door or lid interlock to reach into a drum that can turn.
When to call a technician
Call once the filter is clean, the impeller turns freely, the hose is straight and the code still returns.

What this page does not cover
This page reads E2 as Whirlpool documents it for washers in this range, so it covers the appliance class rather than one model line: a front-loader, a top-loader and a combination washer-dryer can all post it, and the part it names is not in the same place on all three. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer, and it is linked from the code index below.
