The answer first
On a Whirlpool washer, E4 means the control did not get the door signal it was waiting for. The lid was opened while the drum was spinning, so the machine stopped the spin — which is the interlock doing exactly what it is there for.
Error codes
Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| E4 | If you have received an E4 error code, it means the lid has been opened during the spin cycle. |
What you observe
- The spin stops when the lid is lifted, or seems to stop on its own — If nobody touched the lid, the switch is reporting an opening that did not happen — which is the same code with a very different cause.
- The door itself looks and feels normal — It closes, it seals, and nothing is visibly out of place — which is the usual case, because the part that reports the door is not the part you touch.
- NEAR MISS — the door is physically stuck and will not open — A mechanically jammed door is a different problem from a door the control cannot read, and forcing it is how the handle and the frame get damaged.
Ranked causes
- The lid was genuinely opened during the spin — Ranked first because it is what the code says and it is usually literally true.
- The harness to the door hardware is chafed or a connector has backed out — The wiring to the door area flexes with the door or sits near a heat source, and an open there is indistinguishable from a failed switch as far as the control is concerned.
- The control that reads the door circuit has failed — Last: it is the expensive answer, it is the least likely, and it is only credible once the hardware, the switch and the wiring have read correctly.
What to check first, and why
- Cut power, restore it, and see whether the code clears — On door faults a power-down also releases a latch that has stopped part-way, which is worth doing first because it can restore access before anything else is attempted.
- Watch and listen at the door as the control tries again — Start a spin, stand back, and watch whether the lid stays fully down.
- Check the switch and the latch circuit at the control connector — A meter on the switch circuit is what separates a failed switch from a latch that never moved, and it needs the panel off.
The steps you can do yourself
- Cut power at the breaker for a full minute and restore it — A full power-down clears the stored code and, on most front-loaders, releases the door once the control no longer senses water in the drum.
About 5 min
- Clear the door opening and close it firmly, then retry — Close the lid firmly, redistribute the load so the machine does not shake, and restart the spin.
About 10 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on live terminals or a panel off — That is the line between an owner check and a service call on this circuit.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Unplug the washer or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off, and close both taps at the wall. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Drain the drum through the pump filter into a shallow pan before you tip or move the machine, and never defeat the door or lid interlock to reach into a drum that can turn.
Where the owner checks end
Call once the opening is clear, the door closes properly and a full power-down has not fixed it. A lid switch that reports an opening that did not happen needs measuring at the control, with the top of the machine off.

What this page does and does not cover
This page reads E4 as Whirlpool documents it for washers in this range, so it covers the appliance class rather than one model line: a front-loader, a top-loader and a combination washer-dryer can all post it, and the part it names is not in the same place on all three. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer, and it is linked from the code index below.
