What it means, first
C81 means the cooktop protected itself by shutting the cooking area down after it overheated. Before anything is replaced, an empty or dry pan left on heat, or a pan far smaller than the area it sat on accounts for a large share of these, and it is free to eliminate. You can cook on the other areas, and this one comes back after a cool-down unless the cause is still there.
