The short answer
A freezer that runs without freezing has usually lost airflow or gained warm air, not lost its compressor. On this cabinet the first suspect is frost build-up choking the airflow.
What you observe
- Ice cream is soft and packets feel pliable — The cabinet is above freezing point but not obviously warm.
- A heavy build-up of frost on the walls or the lid — Warm humid air is getting in, and the frost is the evidence.
- Frost has formed over the air vents at the back — An upright that can no longer circulate its own air.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is silent and everything has thawed — That is a power or start-circuit fault; check the socket and the breaker before anything on this list.
Causes, most likely first on a SKS freezer
- Frost build-up choking the airflow — On a frost-free upright, frost over the vents stops the circulation the cabinet depends on. Ranked first on a SKS freezer: it builds gradually, which is why the cabinet gets a little warmer each month with nothing having broken.
- Lid or door seal not sealing — A chest lid that no longer sits flat, or an upright gasket that has hardened, lets warm humid air in all day.
- The room, the load or the clearance around the cabinet — A cabinet jammed against a wall, or one that is nearly empty, both hold temperature badly.
- Evaporator fan not moving air, on a frost-free cabinet — When it stops, the evaporator ices solid and the cabinet warms with the compressor still running.
Check in this order, and why
- Look at the thickness of the frost on the walls and over the vents — On an upright, frost over the rear vents is the whole story.
- Close the lid or door on a sheet of paper and pull it out, right round — On a chest freezer check the hinge end: that is where the lid lifts first.
- Note how warm or cold the room gets, and check the clearance around the cabinet — A nearly empty freezer loses its cold every time it is opened.
What an owner can safely check
- Empty the cabinet into coolers, switch it off and let it defrost completely with the lid open — Never chip or pry at frost: warm air and time only. Dry the cabinet before restarting it.

- Test the seal with paper all the way round, then wash the gasket or lid seat with warm soapy water — A gasket stiff with grease often seals again once it is clean and warm; one that stays flat is finished.

- STOP HERE if the next check needs a panel off or a meter on live terminals — That is where the owner checks end and a service call begins, whatever the ranking says.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the freezer or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is down. Do not chip or pry at frost: on a chest freezer the tubing is moulded into the wall and a puncture releases the refrigerant. Warm air and patience are the only safe tools. Empty the cabinet into coolers before you move it, and mind a heavy lid.
When to call a technician
Call once the seal, the frost, the clearance, the coil and the setting are all dealt with and the cabinet is still warm, because what is left is behind a panel or on the refrigerant side. Move the contents first — a freezer full of food is worth more than the repair. Door and hinge work on a panelled machine is a trained job: the panel weight is carried by the hinge springs and a mis-set hinge damages the cabinetry as well as the appliance.

What this page does not cover
This page covers the SKS freezer as a class, not one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is linked above and it is the better answer — read it first. Deliberately not here: part numbers, wiring colours, panel removal order and torque figures, all of which differ between families under one nameplate.
