The answer first
A freezer that has started making a noise is usually rattling rather than failing. The ranking here begins with cabinet not level, or touching a wall, and the compressor sits low because compressors rarely announce themselves. Find where the sound is first.
What you observe
- A buzz from the back or the base that comes and goes — The compressor or its mounts, and the timing tells you which.
- A rattle that stops when you press on the cabinet — Panel or tubing resonance rather than a failing part.
- A knock once or twice an hour — Expansion, or a defrost cycle starting on a frost-free cabinet.
- A gurgle or hiss after the compressor stops — Refrigerant settling, and normal on every cabinet.
- NEAR MISS — the noise is only when the lid is opened — Hinge or lid hardware, which is a nuisance rather than a fault.
Causes, most likely first on a SKS freezer
- Cabinet not level, or touching a wall — A freezer resting against a wall transmits ordinary compressor vibration straight into the structure. Ranked first on a SKS freezer: freezers are moved and re-sited more often than any other appliance, and the noise usually starts the same day.
- Lid, hinge or counterbalance — An upright door hinge does the same in a lower key.
- Drain pan or base tray vibrating — It is always mistaken for the compressor because it sits directly above it.
- Frost touching the fan or the shelving — Frost that has built up onto the fan blade or a shelf support ticks and rattles in time with the fan.
Check in this order, and why
- Push gently on the top corners and check the clearance behind — Any rock means the feet need adjusting.
- Note whether the noise happens only when the lid is opened or closed — A use-related noise is hardware rather than a running fault.
- Reach under with the power off and check the pan or tray is seated — Press on it while the unit runs: a noise that changes is the tray.
What an owner can safely check
- Level the cabinet on its feet and pull it far enough forward that nothing touches the wall — A cabinet standing square with clear air behind it loses most of its noise immediately.

- Switch off, check the base tray or drain pan is seated square in its rails, and reseat it — A pan simply out of position is a free fix; a cracked one is a cheap part.

- STOP HERE if the next check needs a panel off or a meter on live terminals — That is where the owner checks end and a service call begins, whatever the ranking says.
Before you open anything
Safety
Disconnect power before opening anything and let any capacitor bleed down before you reach past a board. Frost comes off with warm air and time, never with a blade. Sealed-system and refrigerant work is licensed work and is never an owner job. Empty a loaded freezer before you move it.
When to call a technician
Call when the noise is a grinding that worsens, when a fan behind a fixed panel is clearly the source, or when the cabinet has also stopped holding temperature. A rattle alone is rarely urgent. Door and hinge work on a panelled machine is a trained job: the panel weight is carried by the hinge springs and a mis-set hinge damages the cabinetry as well as the appliance.
