Electronic Board or Mechanical Timer#
Which control you have decides the part. A digital display or touch buttons means an electronic board; a rotary dial with detent positions usually means a mechanical timer, though some dial models still use a board for cycle logic. The board runs its own logic on a 120V supply while switching the 240V element circuit through that heating relay. Electronic boards fail more often than timers because they carry more that can degrade — capacitors, relays, and surface-mount solder joints — and the most common failure by far is that heating relay giving out, leaving a dryer that runs but never warms.

Read the Codes First#
Before ordering anything, pull the stored fault codes. Maytag dryers on the Whirlpool platform use an E-number system, and you enter diagnostic mode with a button sequence printed on the tech sheet inside the cabinet, usually behind the lower front panel. An E1 or E2 points at a specific circuit and can save you from replacing a good board — a dryer that keeps shutting off early, for instance, is often the board misreading a sensor rather than a dead board, and the codes help tell those apart.
Replacing the Board#
- Disconnect power at the plug or breaker — a dryer runs on 240V and that is a serious shock hazard, so confirm it is dead.
- Reach the board behind the top console: remove the screws at each end of the back panel and tilt the console forward.
- Photograph every harness before disconnecting — the board carries three to six multi-pin connectors — and note any ground wires on the mounting bracket.
- Remove the board mounting screws, slide the old board out, and transfer any spacers or hardware to the new one.
- Install the new board, reconnect each harness to match your photos, and close the console.
- Restore power, run the diagnostic to confirm zero stored codes, and run a timed cycle with a damp towel to verify both tumbling and heat.

Repair the Relay, or the Whole Board#
Because it is usually the heating relay that fails, some technicians desolder the dead relay and solder in a new one, saving the cost of a full board. That works but needs soldering skill and component-level know-how; for most people a full board swap is the standard, reliable repair. If you go that route, note that Maytag dryers marketed as Commercial Technology use the same Whirlpool electronic platform but carry Maytag-specific board part numbers, so order by your exact model number rather than cross-referencing to a generic Whirlpool board — though the underlying Whirlpool W10 cross-reference is worth checking on shared components.
Why the Relay Wears Out#
The heating relay is the hardest-worked part on the board because it switches a heavy load hundreds of times a cycle as the board pulses the heat to hold temperature. Over thousands of cycles the contacts erode and finally stick open, which is the tumbles-but-no-heat symptom. There is little to do to prevent it beyond keeping airflow clear — a clogged lint screen or vent makes the board cycle the heat harder and more often, working that relay more than it should, so good lint hygiene indirectly spares the board.
