LG Washer UE: The Drum Cannot Balance for Spin
UE means the washer attempted to reach spin speed but the drum's vibration sensor detected unacceptable imbalance. The board tried multiple redistribution attempts (you may have heard the drum slowly rotating, stopping, reversing — that is the auto-balance routine) and could not achieve a balanced spin.
uE vs. UE: The Capital Letter Matters
LG displays lowercase "uE" while the auto-balance routine is still trying. This is normal during the redistribution process and may resolve on its own within 5-10 minutes. If the routine fails after several attempts, the display changes to uppercase "UE" — this is the error requiring your intervention.
If you see lowercase uE, wait. If it changes to uppercase UE, the load needs manual redistribution.

Manual Redistribution
- Press Pause. Wait for the door to unlock (may take 1-2 minutes for water to drain below the door level)
- Open the door
- Rearrange the items evenly around the drum circumference. Avoid clumping heavy items on one side
- Close the door. Press Start to resume
What Causes Chronic UE
Single Heavy Item (40%)
A single large comforter, blanket, or bath sheet wraps into a ball and clings to one side of the drum during spin. The mass differential exceeds the balance system's compensation range.
Fix: Wash heavy items with 2-3 towels to provide counterbalance mass. Comforters need a large-capacity machine — if the comforter fills more than 75% of the drum, it cannot redistribute during spin.
Mixed Fabric Weights (20%)
Washing a heavy pair of jeans with lightweight blouses creates imbalance. The jeans absorb more water, becoming much heavier. During spin, the jeans migrate to the drum's outer wall while lightweight items cannot counterbalance.
Fix: Wash similar-weight items together. Heavy items (jeans, towels, sweatshirts) in one load. Light items (underwear, blouses, socks) in another.
Small Load (15%)
Too few items cannot distribute evenly around the drum. Two shirts in a large drum cannot balance at spin speed.
Fix: Add items or use a smaller cycle setting if available. Most LG washers need at least 3-4 lbs of laundry for the balance system to work effectively.
Shock Absorbers Worn (15%)
LG front-loaders have 2-4 shock absorbers (dampers) connecting the outer tub to the frame. These absorb vibration during spin. When worn, they cannot dampen the normal slight imbalance that the balance system corrects. The tub bounces excessively, and the vibration sensor reads an imbalance that does not exist in the drum itself.
Test: Open the door. Push down on the drum firmly and release. The drum should bounce 1-2 times and settle. More than 3 bounces = shock absorbers are weak.
Suspension Springs (5%)
Top-load LG washers use suspension rods that connect the tub to the top of the cabinet. Front-loaders use springs that support the tub weight from above. A broken spring causes the tub to tilt, creating a permanent imbalance.
Counterweight Loose or Cracked (5%)
Concrete counterweights attached to the outer tub dampen vibration. If a counterweight bolt loosens or the concrete cracks, the effective mass distribution changes, causing imbalance.
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

UE at High Speed Only
If UE occurs only during the high-speed final spin (not during the initial lower-speed spin), the load may balance adequately at low speed but not at 1,200-1,400 RPM. Reducing the spin speed setting to Medium or Low may allow the cycle to complete while you schedule shock absorber replacement.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

LG's TurboWash and UE
TurboWash cycles use higher-force spray jets during the wash phase. These jets can push lightweight items into clumps before the spin phase begins, creating a pre-formed imbalance that the auto-balance routine cannot fix. If UE appears primarily on TurboWash cycles, reduce the load size or switch to Normal wash.
